First meeting of Rolls and Royce at Manchester Midland Hotel right? HQ in Derby, and has been for the vast majority (all?) of it's history. RR is Derby. They agreed to share with the UK, but US Admiral Rickover would only sanction the deal if RR were in control. Dunno what the original spec power output was, but in a recent-ish documentary about the UK nuclear sub fleet, a Navy spokesman states that the current version could power a city the size of Portsmouth...bit bigger than Derby...and it fits on a boat of about 13m diameter. Actually the model for steel frame buildings is more likely Oriel Chambers in Liverpool (1864). One of the founders of the Chicago school of architecture, John Wellborn Root, lived and studied in Liverpool in the 1860s (actually to avoid the American Civil War) and returned to Chicago having been influenced by the designer of Oriel Chambers. The rest is skyscraper history. More interesting is the second building of its type in Cook Street. There is a pub opposite (not a very good one, unfortunately) from where you can study the beauty of the facade.

It's a long time since I picked up this bit of information so you could be right. There was defo something about the structure of one of the mills in Belper that allowed for skyscraper support and the building of exceptionally heavy weight - might be earlier - could be Iron fireproofing and weight distribution . The dance for Black Laces Agadoo also originates from a PA appearance they did at the Pink Coconut . They copied it from two girls at the front . Not sure that's a brand we should be that proud of though.

sawley_ram
Wow had no idea about Kathy at all I just thought this was something that had been passed down, but it's very public knowledge. I remember going abroad for the first time to Berlin on a school trip and they had an "American Candy" shop. I distinctly remember seeing packets of Swizzel Mathlows love hearts with "New Mills, Derbyshire" on the back which we all got excited about seeing there. Don't think the shop staff were bothered.
