What do other people do on Mothers Day?

It's very quiet on here today, given that we won 6 -1 yesterday (or maybe because we won 6 - 1 yesterday!)

I assume a lot of people are out entertaining their mothers.

I haven't got a mother and am not a mother so always find myself at a loose end on Mothers Day.

I try to avoid Facebook; so far I've done the ironing and a bit of gardening and am now cooking lunch.

I wonder how many are in the same situation and what they do with this day every year?

We usually take a trip to "see the mother-in-law"... fresh flowers, wipe her headstone down, pluck a few weeds, that sort of thing!

My parents both died when I was still in my teens, and as they were cremated, there's nothing to visit, so there's no action there.

Muckerette usually get a speedy visit from one or all of our kids, but daughter popped round last night instead (without the 3 grand daughters), one son was planning to visit this morning (with the grandson), but something unavoidable has cropped up, so he'll "try and get down in the week".  (He's a good hour or so North).  Our other son (no kids) has emigrated to Falmouth (and it seems he's forgotten what day it is... again!), but we did facetime him Thursday evening though.

We most definitely avoid pub Sunday lunches on Mother's day, even though we've had one for about the last 6 consecutive Sundays! (Seeing as we've been out walking in the Derbyshire Countryside).

So, in answer to your question... apart from the headstone cleaning... not a lot, I guess!  :-)

...They've lost an hour too this year, of course!  ;-(

They should give them an extra Mother's Day as compensation... they all deserve it!

Mums are the best people in the world!

Snap!

I wasn't able to have children (I wanted eleven, all boys!) so it's my least favourite day of the year.

You'd think it would feel different after 44 years, but it doesn't.

I have stupidly never considered someone who is in your position on Mother's Day, probably as my wife and I still both have our mothers and we have kids too. My great-nan is still going strong as well.

Must be a really tough day for you and other people in the same situation.

Sorry to hear that, Angie. You might like this, which popped up on my timeline a couple of times yesterday (I think Jody Morris shared it on Instagram):

Can always rely onthe angelic tones of the greatest love song writer in history to make It all ok again.

You took your Mum to see The Wedding Present - now that is a great way to spend the day....

I know I'm going to sound like a right grouch now but the whole Clinton Card-day phenomena is so hard to keep up with. Valentines, Birthdays, International Women's Day, Anniversaries, Mothering Sunday, Christmas - it just seems like every other week the pressure is on to buy a card and show your affection in that way that the card companies and flower sellers deem appropriate.

I'm a much bigger fan of 'I made lunch for us today coz I love you' on July 18th or any other random day. Of course, I am wholly aware this logic works on any other day of the year except Mothering Sunday....

Nothing, never have, nor Father's Day, I dont consider them valid days of celebration, there's no real tradition behind them, just a made up day to sell cards.

What's wrong with just honouring you parents on their birthdays? Why do you need another, commercially lead day for it? It's balls.

Wait until there’s little coconuts falling from the tree.

You’ll be expecting something for all the outlay throughout the year! ?

It lost its meaning for me years ago, the only realisation I have of the day is when I stumble into my local Asda and see the foyer rammed out with flowers and bouquets then I make the connection - which is then quickly assigned to the internal memory bin.

If you have to have a special day to cherish your mother then there is something horribly wrong somewhere.

Mothering Sunday dates back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans.  It has been comercialised, as has xmas, birthdays, halloween, easter etc. You can thank the good US of A, in the main part.
