Danelaw Rams
Always been fascinated with our history, place names, regional accents and words. Derby (by) meaning Settlement/farmstead , and one of the 14 shires which made up the Danelaw. Repton being one of most important Settlements of all. Pearl Ram
I live near Hertford, I believe it was spelt Hartford a long time ago. Now, a hart is a male deer over five years old and the ford indicates the river/stream running through the town. Hartford literally means deer by the water. Not a lot of people know that...or wanted to know that. ?

Mucker1884
And I was under the impression that "Der" also referred to Deer, and "by" referred to town, hence Derby meaning Deer Town (and hence the deer on the Derby/Derbyshire Coat of Arms.
