I'd heard that, and it was because that was the only season when early rounds were played over two legs. 

But having checked Wikipedia, there doesn't appear to be any defeats.

My dad used to tell me that that was the only way Derby could win anything, they had to win it twice! ?

Correct on the two legs thing.

Without checking...

It was Charlton who lost one leg (v Fulham possibly?) but went through on aggregate.  Hence the question must include "...to have reached the final" as opposed to "...to have won it"!
