Christ - even we might be in with a chance of European competition at this rate. Even now we are going to have the top 7 teams qualifying for some kind of European competition most seasons - may as well just make it the top 10

16 extra teams throughout Europe (in the group stages). Most likely means the teams who usually get knocked out in the playoffs, make it into the group stages... Essentially no extra European spots, but Arsenal will now have the chance to win a trophy.

Sort of a return of the cup winners cup, but make it a cup losers cup?

This is a long term plot to get rid of national leagues completely and every body plays in some European ladder! So look forward to away trips to some Eastern European outpost every 2 weeks.

“Sorry can’t go to Croatia away this week as it’s a midweek game and I’ve got the kids in school the next morning”

”Sorry not good enough, you have to support the team no matter what”

Would be perfect to do this if they reduced the Champions league down to just the Champions.......but they never will..

The CL is becoming more and more like the European Super League they dream of.

Top four from England, Spain, Italy and Germany now automatically qualify. So that's half the teams already there. Throw in three from France (PSG, Lyon and Monaco), and three from Portugal (Porto, Benfica and Sporting) and you've now got 26/32.

This new cup competition is surely designed for the big clubs from smaller nations who have no chance of winning the CL or Europa League which has become like a closed shop.

There's too much football. (copyright Clough, B, circa 1980)

This is just going to further devalue the other European competitions (as if having non-Champions in the 'Champions' League doesn't already do that).

There's now so many games going on in various things, that I watch less than if they just showed one European game per week like they used to. Don't think I even watch the finals last year. Not entirely sure who won. Probably one of the Spanish teams.

The 'market', as it is, is saturated and unlike things which are normally not affected by market saturation i.e. Heroin, you can choose to not be addicted to what is on offer.

It's all become more meaningless. It's a Starbucks frappe to take out. It's a £3 lunchtime meal deal from Tesco Express. It's two minutes with a Porno and The 5th Earl of St. Martins.

What it should be, is espresso in a square in Milan, a meal for two at Marco Pierre White's, and all night with your wife/Margot Robbie.

Go back to straight knockout in the European Cup, unseeded, champions of European leagues only. Maybe a UEFA Cup for teams that come 2nd, and then a Cup Winners Cup.

Far better, less games (which the managers of the current elite should like), more trophies (which the ad men and promoters and suits at UEFA like, but at least these one's will be good), more equal distribution of wealth to teams outside the big 5 leagues (which the Communists should like), different teams playing each other in the latter stages (which the fans should like), more interest.

It'll never happen.

Instead they'll sell it to us that now everyone in the top 10 in the Premier League is a winner, a potential giant of European football, and we really want to watch Everton start their 'European adventure' in the first match of a year-long competition, against some un-financially doped side from Kazakhstan.

It used to be good, didn't it?

Apart from some of the dross that enters in the group stages, the Champions League is perfect as it is imo.

The knockout games are the most exciting matches in World football at the moment.

It's perfect apart from half of the teams in there aren't actually Champions.

And the tournament is seeded so UEFA can try and hand pick the semi finalists.

I can't think of many things that sum up what is ruining football today more than the 'Champions' League.

Would simply calling it the European Cup again solve that problem for you?

The seeding in the second round is based on how teams did in the group stages, which is fair enough.

The fact that it's getting harder and harder for the teams from smaller countries to qualify for the group stages is a bit of a shame though.

Why do we need seeding in any competition?

If you're good enough to win the competition you should be able to beat anyone.

Why do we need a league format? What was wrong with knockout format.

If UEFA want more games to generate money, just make the games 2 legs.

The competition is more about money than football. Sad times.

Unfortunately being money driven could be said about all competitions.

I think it's good that there is an incentive to win the group, the idea that your second round tie should be easier, based how you did in the group stages.  So seeding there based on group position is a positive thing in my view.  Seeding at the start of the group stages?  It wouldn't bother me if that were dropped, but given that's it's mostly based on how a team did in the league, or in the CL previously I haven't got too much against it.

I wouldn't argue against the competition being a knock out format from the start again and dropping the group stages altogether, with all teams big or small starting the competition from Round 1. No or very few 'qualifying' matches.

There are still great games at the start of the competition and fwiw, in last season’s competition Real Madrid had to get past Dortmund, Spurs, PSG, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Liverpool to win the champions league.
