What do you guys think?

Well, if you didn't speed it wouldn't matter who's hiding in the bushes or where the hidden cameras in vans were. That's the obvious answer right?

Speeding is one of those things, everyone knows the limit but still pushes it to 35 in a 30 when nobody is looking.....until they get caught by someone hiding in the bush.

You have no defence I'm afraid, suck up the speeding awareness course and say you're sorry Mr/Mrs Officer.

My missus has just come back from hers, got caught doing 70 or something in a 60, roadworks on the motorway on her way to the airport at 2am roads absolutely dead not a workman in sight. Reckons she didn't see anything, camera on a cone think it was. £90 lighter in the purse but no points.

What are the rules for these bar stewards hiding in bushes trying to catch you out? Should there be warning signs? Community concern areas near a school should the camera be set up on a Sunday when the school is closed? I wouldn’t say I drive fast but I may go over 30 mph from time to time. ?

The rules are, there are no rules for these muppets. It’s meant to be safety ain’t it? That’s why cameras are painted yellow. Not there to catch you out. Supposedly.

Even if you take the awareness course, you still ya e to declare it to your insurance.

Not true...is it? Pretty sure it's not. No record is held by DVLA so the insurance companies would get told nowt if they asked, it's only convictions you have to declare.

Could be wrong mind you, has happened.

Tough titty. There is a reason that there are speed limits, and if you exceed them and get caught, then you deserve your penalty points, fines and bans. There are no excuses - you are either being reckless or driving without due care and attention. In other words, you are a rubbish driver.

Quote

"When applying for car insurance, insurers ask if you have any motoring convictions or prosecutions. As neither of these apply to drivers who have attended a speed awareness course, the Financial Ombudsman has confirmed that drivers attending a course can honestly answer 'No' to this question.

"However, if an insurer asks specifically about attendance of a speed awareness course, then drivers must provide this information on the application form or at any other time during the lifetime of the insurance policy. Failure to do so may invalidate the insurance.

Quick Google shows a couple of companies do ask, Admiral and Elephant, plenty don't.

If I believed that the speed limits are well thought out, for the safety of pedestrians and drivers then I'd be less inclined to think it was all about the money that was collected.

They are old and outdated.. Around town 30 is fine but motorways should be at least 85.

I actually thought if they were going to 'hide' behind bushes then it had to be on roads where there were permanent speed camera warnings signs, or a dead give away a temporary one.

Like everyone has said, the rules are the rules even if we dont agree with them.

In todays modern vehicles a safe speed limit on a motorway should be at least 80 and probably 99% of the time you are fine doing that or even more, but if a police car pulls you over then you cant argue.

That said I am fairly sure there is a rule of thumb which is something like 10% plus 3 mph or something like that. See I dont even know it but thats the crux I guess.

Also, your sat nav gives you a more accurate MPH, so if your car says you are doing 80 chances are you are only doing about 76.

Thing is I do tend to speed on a motorway or dual carriageway, i will generally sit at around 82 on a motorway unless its a smart one with a variable speed limit, then i stick to the limit., I havent been done for speeding for about 15 years, but in built up areas and roadworks i stick to the limit.

That said I would fine someone far more for throwing litter from a car or using a mobile phone than speeding, as a lot of speeding, although i guess careless is often a mistake. I was once told the most common speeding offence is 38 in a 30.

Using a phone or throwing litter from the window is a very deliberate act.

I'm dubious about police tactics after two incidents.

1. I was driving up the a38 dual carriage in a poxy 1.6 litre escort that had about as much acceleration as a donkey, overtaking a line of three slow moving lorries. As i moved out to overtake i looked in the rear view mirror and saw a car - still  a long way off - coming up in the outside lane, going like a bat out of hell. From that moment i barely took my eyes off the mirror. I thought he's got to slow down or he's going to go up my @Arse. I wasn't going go be able to pull back in until i'd got past all three lorries, and this car clearly wasn't going to slow down at all. I put my foot flat to floor to get past the lorries and get back in. There was a barely perceptible increase in my speed, and still this thing was flying towards me. It never slowed down at all, and i just got past the last lorry and pulled over as it roared past. It then immediately pulled in front me, a slammed the anchors on, before indicating me to pull over. It was an unmarked police car. They made me get out; get in the back of their car; and then accused ME of speeding. I was speechless. I probably was speeding by the end but if so, they caused the whole incident. After 3 points and a fine i didn't trust the police again.

so.....incident 2.

2 xmas in ashbourne. Snowing. The road was trecherous. I turned left from a stationary position at some traffic lights and immediately saw this hi-viz copper standing behind a speed camera  some way ahead on the right. I checked my speed. As i had just pulled away from stationary i was only doing @20mph. I watched the speedo and accelerated to 28. It was snowing and the road was covered in snow so i wasn't even interested in going fast. I crawled towards him at 28mph. As i approached he stepped forward and beckoned me over. After the usual "do you know what the speed limit is sir" he accused me of exceeding the 30mph limit. I was so angry and so certain i hadn't, i said "you lying bar steward". I expected to get hauled out and arrested but instead he wanted me to take a breathyliser as i had allegedly commited an offence. This was the whole purpose. He was after drink drivers and he knew i wasn't speeding. I hadn't had a drink so i took the breathyliser test and passed. He started to lecture me on appropriate disposal of the test kit. I said "you fkn dispose of it, its your crap" and he let me go. Why did he let me go if i'd been deliberately abusive and was speeding. Because he knew i hadn't and he'd probably be more likely to get in trouble for fabricating evidence.

I would call myself an experienced driver and I drive safely to the conditions of the road and environment. Where this dhead was stood behind a Bush was where the road was still 30mph but there was only a school then open road. Surely on a Sunday the school is closed no danger or hazards to worry about.

Anyway I now have a two week wait to see if I was over or not. It these Townies faults who want to come and live in the country and then do nothing but moan.

Was it signed as a 30 mph speed limit? If so, why did you think that the law didn't apply to you?

There wasn’t much signing only a 30 sign about a mile back and no camera or speed enforcement signs anywhere. I haven’t said the law doesn’t apply to me I just think the polices time would be better spent if they set up outside the school when it is open in the week. Then they might catch someone who may actually cause an accident.

I went down a road once and a sign flashed up with a big red 30 flashing away. I said to The missus that’s wrong I’m doing at least 40.

Doesnt need to be signs for it to be a 30 mph limit.

If its a built up area with street lights, unless there are signs telling you otherwise, its 30.

Yeah I know. I think I was on the nose with the speed but I have looked into where this camera was placed and it is a community concern no accidents but obviously some resident expert (probably retired) has chewed plods ear until they have caved in and set up a camera. I bet the school was part of the argument for having one. Then set it up while the school is closed.
