Also of interest in that article.

The FA is likely to appeal its own sanction, which is far more severe than those Fifa has imposed for racist and homophobic abuse during the World Cup.

As exclusively revealed by the Daily Telegraph, it even secretly let off the Croatian Football Federation with a warning for fascist banners displayed by the country’s fans.

The FA was already angry with the disparity after being fined £16,000 after a picture emerged showing a can of Red Bull in the England dugout during their Under-20 World Cup triumph in South Korea.

Powerade, part of the Coca-Cola family, is Fifa’s official energy drink.

It's all about money.

Sweden's Andreas Granqvist fined the same amount for the same thing, in their Quarter Final vs. England.

Same happened with Lord Bentner, last Euros, I think?

All because they daren't upset the likes of Nike et al, who's branding is still visible.

Farcical.

On the point of not upsetting sponsors, did you know that the reason that players get booked after taking their shirts if they score is because you can’t see the club/national team’s sponsorship.

“Sponsors pay money to have their brand on shirts. A goal scorer gets a lot of close-ups during their celebration.

It's because people pay for advertising.”

National teams aren't sponsored - so that may not necessarily hold. I wouldn't be surprised though.

Think it was more to do with the trend of displaying messages at one time?

The English FA fined £53,000.00 for their players wearing the wrong socks because it interferes with a sponsorship deal with Adidas.

In 2004 the Spanish FA were fined £44,750.00 for racist chants towards English players during a friendly match.

Another example;

The English FA fined £16,000 for a player using the wrong energy drink at the U20's World Cup, only £6,000 less than the Russian FA were fined for their fans racially abusing French players in a friendly.

Priorities eh?

This is a complete disgrace. Basically Fifa are under pressure from Nike and Adidas because of a company in the south of England making socks that increase the comfort of a player. Adidas and Nike amongst others want to sink a small company in fear of them ruing their crappy products and brand.

Shirt manufacturer don’t forget.

The only reason Nike purchased Umbro was to get the England shirt deal!
