Jim Smith

Ps: I still wish we had not sacked Jim Smith that season.

The season before, we were struggling, so he only goes and signs Taribo West on loan for the rest of the season to keep us up!! Who knows who would of walked through the door to help out!

TBE was great for those years. Surely a derby legend.

No, I’d definitely watch that one.

At the time, it was horrible to watch. But with the benefit of knowing how it all ends, I imagine I’d be excited to watch it now, excited knowing it’s the last game we’ll loose all season, excited for the games to follow, and excited to see Igor’s debut goal, knowing it marks the start of a beautiful era.

If you look at it in hindsight, it really all started with that game at tranmere.

We lost away at Sunderland and then the last game at West Brom.

I think it was Roy Mac before him - he had got us to playoff final where we experienced one of my worst footballing days ever losing playoff final to Leicester and the some big toothless git fouling our keeper for the winner.

The following season we finished about half way and then they got rid of him and bought in TBE

I remember being totally underwhelmed by this especially when he started selling all the young assets and replacing/swapping them with journeymen like Craig Short for a certain - Gary Rowett

And Lee Mills for Robbie Van der Laan ( At the time I thought that was a bad deal - but I was young and foolish then ) (well not that young)

And we went up in 2nd behind Sunderland

I was livid about that!!  I thought Mills as a good player and could fire us to greatness.  Plus we'd left ourselves with just Gabbiadini, a foreigner we'd never heard of and reserve striker who'd done nothing at that point in time.  Just goes to show most fans know F all...

I remember watching something about Jim at some Forum. He said he bumped into a Notts County Fan and said what do you think of two football teams in Nottingham and the Notts County fan said that would be nice wouldn't it. Class

'arry and Jim were a legendary double act round these parts for a while as they boozed their way up and down the solent, from Portsmouth to Southampton and back.

Always good humoured and regulars at local charity dinners. always seemed to be a couple of bottles of decent red up for auction. not necessarily full tho….?

It never happened. We went undefeated and we won the league. Won the premier league the next season, and the champions league the season after that. Didn’t loose a game for three years. Who is this West Brom you speak of?

Always was.

Remember us being 3-1 up there and losing 3-4. Martin Taylor before he was good let in a couple of really soft goals.

My 1st ever away game.

I'd begun to think I'd imagined it, so thanks for confirming.

Actually now you speak of it, I think that you're right.

Best game I ever went to was when we beat Man U at Hillsborough 5-0 in 1976 in the semi-final of the FA Cup. It was the year we put 9 past Southampton in the final.

1997/98

We won 16 out of 38 games and finished 10 points behind 3rd placed Liverpool who won 18 games

Bought Baiano from Fiorentina and sold Asanovic to Napoli. Neither transfer was anywhere near a million pounds

We beat the top 3.

Wanchope hit 17 in all comps.

Nearly made Europe and was still possible on the last day?

We even beat Leicester. We lost 4-0 to them too but we did beat them in the first game.

It's football porn

Didn't we lose to Palace last game of season. The only game they won at home that season that cost us europe?

A quick Google says we did lose to Palace away near the end of the season. But the last game was Liverpool which we won 1-0.

Yeah, Palace won their first home game 34 games into the season against us. But managed to beat Wednesday on the last day too.

Derby always seem to make the impossible balls up. When all we have to do is not be really rubbish we manage to be useless. Even in the Smith era!

What scares me about our situation now compared to jim smiths

back when Cox spent Lionel's millions he at least bought young and potential.

its a lot easier to maket to others the likes of a young pembridge, Johnson, kitson, short and co as young full of potential.

comapare to now where rush and Pearson and clement brought in aging princey player on a right packet and then rush with mclaren gave the likes of an aging Martin and Bryson nice big long and lucrative contracts

moving out players like this will be a lot lot harder than the ones smith had to move out.

this is why imo were crying out for an experienced hand with a wealth of contacts and experianxe of dealing with such a bloated squad and the problems this brings
