All I'm saying is, I've seen countless white people going to fancy dress as black people/characters over the years, and vice-versa.

None of them have felt the need to paint their skin. I guess most people "look beyond it", as they say.

I don't think it was malicious, I am not offended by it - but it's an unnecessary and ill-thought out step.

People will defend it, due to a need to stand against the "liberal agenda" they perceive;

People will attack it due to the "rise of the right" they perceive.

At the end of the day, it's just not a very bright decision - it's not really any worse than that, but it also can't be defended away from that.

Just say something about 'ooh us poor whites can't jump' and then turn the conversation to slavery or American policing.

Either that or sit there praying for a sequel called Black Men Can't Swim so they can have something else to be offended about.

Wasn't that already done with Cool Runnings though GStar?

Genuinely interested to know what black people/characters you have seen portrayed by white people?!

I'd hope people would know me well enough by now to know when I'm joking or not... but you know what... I'm genuinely fearful of saying Michael Jackson.

So I won't.

(anyone who even suspects for a second I'm racist....don't make me post my family picture)

Almost entirely characters, now I think about it.

John Coffey,

Nick Fury,

Lando Calrissian

The ghostbuster, Winston I think his name was (3 black guys went as the other 3 ghostbusters)

That's off the top of my head, there's definitely more I just can't remember the names of the characters. Some of them could be people.

That's a very good point.

But to be fair black people used to let Alan Wells join in sprint races just to show white men can't run fast.

There is a long history of segregation, prejudice and apartheid. There is specific history of black people not being allowed to appear in films, theatre or other performances. They were replaced by white people who blacked up. Therefore a white person for amusement could be seen as representing a time when black people were so prejudiced against that they were allowed to portray themselves in culture.

More contentiously it could be argued that basketball is seen as one of the few areas that white people admit black people excel in therefore this could be viewed as stereotyping and suggesting that this is all black people are good for.

Right, but that's no longer the case. How long do we have to factor in decades old ******** into out social interaction right now?

Forever.

And I'm sure the same people will be happy for us to carry on holding a grudge with countries that did their best to destroy our country and kill our ancestors.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but calling can not hurt me.

What is much more worrying is that we have people throughout the world in some very key positions who either hate who others are/were or want what others had/have.

USA, North Korea, The Middle East, Russia, certain parts of Europe, all with leaders ready to invade, blow up or destroy other countries through sanctions. That's not to mention the buffoons parading under the badge of religion.

Until we sort things out at that level, forgive me if I'm not worried about AG's choice of outift to go to a party.

It's fake outrage I tell you.

We're being led by people ready to destroy us and some people are prepared to write a very strongly worded letter due to a footballers choice of outfit for a party.

80% of society are stupid.

Harlem Globetrotters current line up.

Do you think what people are upset about is misrepresentation?

Otherwise, I don't see the point in 'enlightening' everyone that every globetrotter is either black or latino.

I've made it clear I'm on neither side of the fence when it comes to this debacle of a conversation but that's a strange addition to it.

I don't know what people are upset about honestly I don't and that's coming from someone who was brought up as a white kid by a black dad with a black brother a white brother and a white sister.

To me they were then and they always will be just dad, brother and sister.

I grew up getting my head caved in for being the brother of a black lad. I went to play football for the only all Asian side in the town cos they used to get the living **** kicked out of them and I wanted to give a bit back. I got called racist then as well but I did what I could do to balance the books a bit on and off the pitch.

It's time to let the past go my friend, the more we cling on to stupid outdated ignorant views like those which used to exist, the more they'll hang around.

I understand about educating future generations but come on. it's getting beyond a joke.

I really feel sorry that AG apologised, he didn't mean it the way some wishy washy folk have taken it.

Again I'm sorry if that offends some of you with extra strong held views that the past shouldn't be let go.

As I said, I was at no point offended or upset by AG

I was just confused by you linking the Globetrotter roster, that's all.

I'm sure your family is lovely.

Just out of interest, to the people who are offended by what AG has done, would it be wrong for someone going in fancy dress as an old person to wear a white wig? Or how about a fat person with padding inside their clothes? Or how about a pink swimming cap if representing a bald white person?

I went to one as a vampire, black hair and used make up to make my skin paler....got to be some offence going on ha.

Seriously I do think those examples are different.

I don't think what he did was offensive but him being a public figure and us living in such a faux offended society it was very naive and stupid of him.

I went to one once as Bilbo Baggins, I realised how stupid I was when I received a written complaint from Billy Davies threatening legal action.

Whether he is famous or not is irrelevant.

That's unless we are happy for famous people to be discriminated against of course.

If it's racist I assume he will be getting a visit from the police?

I'm not happy no and no he won't I'm just stating a fact. If I went to the local pubs fancy dress like that no one would bat an eye lid (not that I would), but he is a public figure and life is different for them.

Take someone like john terry or Rooney playing away from home, I bet half the people you know have done it but its private, but because they are public figures we are supposedly outraged by it.

So what if Paul Jewell made a porno, I bet half the people you know also have.

When you are famous you do have to be that extra bit careful.
