David Posted January 22, 2010 Share Posted January 22, 2010 DERBY County have their sights on Millwall's left winger David Martin. Derby are eyeing a possible move for the 24-year-old in the summer, when he is out of contract. But that could change if the circumstances are right and they could try to land the player for a nominal fee during the current transfer window. Martin impressed in two FA Cup games against the Rams this month and fits the bill as manager Nigel Clough looks to freshen up the squad with young, hungry players. Millwall manager Kenny Jackett has played down the chances of losing Martin this month. Jackett, whose team are chasing a top-six finish in League One, said he was not in a position to let players leave, owing to the small size of his squad. "I've had no inquiries from any clubs about any of my players in this window, so that's all I can go on," he said. "We haven't got a massive squad, so there haven't been many people on the fringes of it, with the vast majority being either in the team or as substitutes." Born in Sidcup, Martin was a youth player at Brighton before he moved to Kent and joined non-League club Slade Green. His form alerted Dartford in the summer of 2005 and then he joined Crystal Palace for £25,000 in January 2007. He played 14 League games for Palace before he signed for Millwall two years ago. The initial fee was £50,000, rising to £100,000 on appearances. The Rams have also completed the signing of Manchester City youngster Javan Vidal on loan until the end of the season, as reported in the Telegraph on Saturday. In a busy last few days, Derby have stepped up their bid to add new faces to the squad ahead of the transfer window closing at 5pm tonight. They have asked about taking Stoke City midfielder Michael Tongue on loan and considered making an offer for Plymouth Argyle forward Jamie Mackie, whose goal sank the Rams at Home Park last week. Derby already have four forwards in Rob Hulse, Kris Commons, Chris Porter and Steve Davies, so a move for Mackie is more likely in the summer, unless the situation changes. He has also been linked with Middlesbrough and Burnley. There has been interest in Hulse from two Premier League clubs, Burnley and Stoke. Both enquired about signing the striker on loan. They were willing to pay a loan fee but Derby rejected the requests. Hulse has impressed in his last two games and headed the winner against rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Rams would be extremely reluctant to let him go out on loan. Martin impressed in two FA Cup games against Derby in January and a deal has been agreed with Millwall to bring the 24-year-old to Pride Park. His contract was due to expire in the summer and Millwall have been keen for him to sign a new one. "We've put a lot of effort into developing him as a player and I think he will continue to get better." Striker DJ Campbell and midfielder Lee Johnson have returned to their clubs, Leicester City and Bristol City, after loans. The emergency loan window reopens for Football League clubs a week today and the Rams could look to bring in a pacey striker, with Campbell and Everton's James Vaughan possibilities.
