The FOBT debate, to ban or not to ban.

As many are aware I'm a Gambling Addict. As many of you gamble for fun and responsibly, I just want to get your thoughts about the fixed odds betting terminals in bookmakers up and down the country.

I have many debates on twitter about them but not with people who suffer from the addiction. Just looking for a differing view from people who gamble responsibly.

My position has always been the same regarding FOBT and the lobbyists. I ask the same 2 questions, who makes you place a bet? Who places the bet.... and if they ever answer (which rarely happens) whose responsible.

Thats my position, I know there's many of you on here who like a good punt. Just intrigued to know what people think who are out of the bubble of this addiction debate.

Honestly I have never used one and am unlikely to ever do so. I have seen a fella in my local bookies go absolutely mental and start throwing stuff around as he had just sunk a weeks wages for no return and had to return home and explain why he was already skint to his missus.

On the flip side my old man has played them very occasionally and walked away with a couple of nice wins so I can see the appeal.

In terms of whether I would like to see them banned or not I think a bookies is just as effective without them, plenty of other ways to win/lose money.

I'm not sure what one is but if you're talking about them roulette machines and bandits I think you could lose a lot of money on them. I had a mate who was addicted to gambling. It was terrible the gambling led to all sorts of things and if you haven't noticed I had a mate, he died a few years ago.

I watched a programme with Sean Bean in recently which had a woman who had robbed from the place she worked at to play on them roulette games.

As far as I go I have put a fair wedge in them bandits in my time. Fortunately I saw them for what they are and don't touch them anymore.

I don't think they should be banned but they need to be regulated much better.

They are probably the only thing that keep bookmakers open these days with online gambling been much more convenient and giving the punters much better odds/offers.

Not sure why the government only allow these machines in bookmakers and casinos and not in adult gaming centres.

The preferential treatment for companies who base themselves offshore to avoid corporate tax is quite astonishing.

The government have been promising to review the stakes for quite a while now but all seems quiet from Westminster.

You can bet much higher amounts on these machines. You could lose your money much quicker, giving you less time to think and stop.

True, but how many of those people would never have taken up regular gambling if it wasn't for starting a habit of a pint and a couple of quid in the bandit?. It happened to a couple of people I used to know.

If this can happen then it needs to change:

My question to that is who makes the guy do it? Notice Mr Zarb-Cousins in the tweet, had a conversation on twitter today with him.

It's about addiction. Which is what makes the 'when the fun stops, stop' warning such nonsense.

I had a bit of an addiction to fruit machines in pubs, fortunately before you could put more than 10p a go in. But it would be easy to lose a substantial amount and keep putting more in in some kind of, I don't know really, but I was sure I'd win eventually, just needed to put more in...

Anyway these FOBT sound horrendous, few people bar the bookies are winning and a lot of people will be losing badly, not just money I imagine. Of course they should be regulated, banned for my point of view - they aren't about fun they're about gambling. I no longer play fruit machines, or smoke - two addictions I couldn't just do a little bit of. I feel deeply sorry for some of the folk losing everything on these machines.

Before anyone starts, sod the right to do what you want, society is about looking after people. The bookies are the only ones being looked after here.

Seen my Friend use one once. Put £140.00 in and came out with £200.00. I made him stop though as he was around £100 up then started chasing the Money..

I loved Bet365 but realized no matter how much I made I ended up putting it all back in and more. I was smart enough to realize there was only one winner.

I get jealous of FB groups winning the £10-£1000 challenge etc but it must take them a lot and lot of tries to get it right!

But banning them will not change one thing, they'll still be addicts

Reducing the amount you can put in a time will do a massive difference I think. The addicted will not lose money at a massive rate, and the people hoping for the big payoff wont get as much back so it should be less enticing.

If you are gambling a lot of money you should have to do it through a person. Much like drinking at a pub. They can cut you off if you're too drunk.

The one change I would make would be to bring them in line with roulette in casinos (and of course a roulette wheel is just a FOBT with a nice tablecloth) and not allow a second spin until at least 45 seconds has elapsed.

Agree. Problem with the lobbyists regarding FOBT is run mainly by Fairer Gambling...... bloke who pulls the strings is David Webb, give him a google ans see why he really is interested in these banned.
