vicky-27
SCOTTISH international Russell Anderson is a target for Derby County, who hope to bolster their defensive options ahead of tomorrow's game against Peterborough United. The 31-year-old became a free agent after he had his contract at Sunderland cancelled by mutual consent yesterday and could sign a short-term deal with the Rams today. Derby manager Nigel Clough is keen to bring in a centre-half to cover for injuries. Dean Leacock is out for up to six weeks following surgery on his knee Anderson, 31, was signed by former boss Roy Keane from Scottish side Aberdeen for £1m in June 2007 but made just two appearances for the Black Cats. "This decision has been taken to give him an opportunity to find a club where he can fulfil his desire to play," said Sunderland boss Steve Bruce. "His attitude and determination to get back playing have been exemplary." The centre-back made more than 300 appearances for Aberdeen during an 11-year stay at Pittodrie and captained them. He started just one game for Sunderland and had loan spells with Plymouth and Burnley, with his last first-team game for the Clarets against Fulham in September 2008. He was in talks with Scottish Premier League side Hibernian before his exit from the Stadium of Light.

OLI
Awards Anderson collected the Best Defender Award 05/06 after a run of consistent performances for Aberdeen. In November 2006, he won the Scottish Player of the Month award for the first time in his career.[10] April 2007 saw him nominated for Scottish PFA Players' Player of the Year for the 2006/07 season. He was not only the sole Scottish candidate for the award, but was also the only nominee not playing for Celtic Football Club, the SPL champions. He was also named in the Scottish PFA team of the year for the 2006-07 season.[11]

David
Derby County have today recruited vastly experienced defender Russell Anderson to their squad. The defender joins on a free transfer after having his contract cancelled at Premier League Sunderland by mutual agreement in the last 24 hours. Anderson has put pen-to-paper on a contract until June 2010 at Pride Park and is in contention to make his Rams debut against Peterborough United tomorrow afternoon in the Coca-Cola Championship. The 31-year-old joined the Black Cats in 2007 for £1 Million from Aberdeen and heads to Pride Park with Championship experience under his belt after loan spells with Plymouth Argyle and Burnley over the course of the last two seasons. Anderson has 11 Scotland caps to his name and racked up over 300 appearances with Aberdeen, where he wore the captain's armband, before making the switch to England after ten years at Pittodrie. Rams manager Nigel Clough: "Russell is an excellent defender who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. "He is the type of character we are looking to add to the squad; he wants to play football and is prepared to work hard. "He played in the Championship last season for Burnley, so he knows what it takes to compete in this division. "With Dean Leacock and Miles Addison both carrying injuries it is important to bring in some cover and boost our numbers. "It might take Russell a couple of weeks to get up to full speed, but we need a fresh face in central defence and we believe Russell has the qualities and courage to step up to the mark if we ask him to." Russell Anderson is squad number 27. http://www.dcfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10270~1932649,00.html

Mizer
Hi, wandering Aberdeen fan here. We were quite hopeful he may come back North to us as his son is in school up here and he still owns his house outside Aberdeen. He should be a good signing for you's if he can stay fit. He had a few injuries before moving to Sunderland but got a couple of bad ones when with them/on loan at Burnley.
vicky-27
Cheers for the info Mizer Looks like another ugly, injury prone oldie to me "Russell is an excellent defender who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. -- if he's that good why was he released Only played 2 games for the Black cats - ooh great will fit in well then. David
Behave yersen Vicky, countless players have been released as they are surplus to requirements, they are more than capable of doing a job at another club. Sunderland have Turner, Ferdinand, Nosworthy for a start, he was obviously down the pecking order and never going to get a game. If he's crap he's off in May, no big deal.
