Hughes has seen Hendrick do a decent job for Burnley, Hughes is better than Jeff so he was thinking why not??

we have shed loads of midfielders and a few decent younguns in the under 23's

few wingers to go next

Elsnik will be our next star

Surely the key factor is  If Will is sold will it enable the manager to improve the team and by doing so increase our chances  of promotion?Rowett has made 2 signings so far spending a reported 3 million bring in two great signings.Brian Clough went out and bought a player who was approaching  30 whio had suffered  having the same leg broken twice that player was Dave Mackey so keep your betting money safe until you know exactly who comes.

Who's to say that GR hasn't had to cut a deal quickly to fund incomers that he wants, who may not stick around if we hang out for more?  We just don't know enough to be making hard judgements on what is 'possibly' going on at the club.  Let's take a chill pill and review where we are at the beginning of August, eh?

You can only get what people are willing to pay it's called market forces.

If we don't sell Hughes for 10 Million we could come to regret it if we get nothing later and he is a high earner as well.

You're right, Curtain, it is 'market forces'.

But, on that basis, Hughes is worth more than £8million. We are currently in an environment that has a ludicrously over inflated market. When we're talking about the Pickford's of this world going for £30mill, Van Dijk for £70mill then the market forces are in the favour of selling clubs.

Whether we like it or not, we are a selling club - any Championship club is. But we are a selling club at a time of an over inflated market, particularly over inflated for young English talent.

If Hughes wants to leave, okay. If Rowett wants shot then fine. I believe this to be short-sighted - he may not be part of Rowett's plans but how sustainable is it to build a squad around a manager, especially when we have zero track record of actually backing our managers. We spoke longingly about wanting to build a Southampton style system at the club: an in-built style of play with players based around that. And managers who drop in seamlessly into the equation. We are patently not doing that: we couldn't have had 4 more different managers than our last 4. If we want to play 'the Derby way' we should be building the team around the likes of Hughes.

Okay, he's off. But let's get this straight - this is a player who is highly regarded. A young, English player. If we wanted to get more money for him then we could and would.

Curtains talks about 'market forces'. He says that we can only sell for what people are willing to pay. I am about to put my house on the market - it has been valued at £425,950. If someone offers me £200,000 do I sell up and say 'ah well, its market forces - people will only pay what they will pay'? No. We shouldn't be selling our prized asset for a penny less than his true value. Look at other similar clubs selling their best players - they have maximised value. We aren't. We're crazy. The best prospect we've had for years in an over inflated market and we're selling him on the cheap. Come on.

For the record .

I would like Hughes to stay at Derby .

But who will go to fund team changes which people wanted after last season.

I, too, would like him to stay. I was never someone who advocated wholesale changes but, given our recent transfer outlays, I would like to think we had some money in the bank.

But my point isn't necessarily about Hughes going. I think we're making a mistake but if we are cashing in to fund other moves, please let us take advantage of the 'market forces' and obtain a relative price for him.

we understand that suggestions of a fee of £4.5 million potentially rising to £8m are more accurate than reports of £8m potentially increasing to £10m.

see the Hughes thread in transfer rumours and please keep up

I made the comment before the new fee information came out. Doesnt look as good a deal now, if true.

But who is bidding for him it looks like only Watford !

Keep him but don't expect Rowett to play him week in eeek out as he won't.
