Curtains
Derby County manager Gary Rowett on Will Hughes' move to Watford Derby County manager Gary Rowett has admitted the decision to sell Will Hughes to Watford was a difficult one. Hughes joined the Hornets on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £5 million rising to £9 million. There is also said to be a 15% sell-on fee. Speculation had been rife throughout the summer that the England Under-21 international would make the move from Pride Park – and it was confirmed on Saturday evening. He is the second Derby player to leave under Rowett's regime, following Abdoul Camara out, as the former Birmingham City boss starts to reshape his squad. "From a financial aspect we have for Financial Fair Play and things like that we have to adhere to," Rowett told RamsTV. "We're trying to restructure and rebuild around different factors. "We thought it was a sensible decision – a difficult decision – I can understand it's difficult for a lot of the fans, but like I've said before we have to make tough decisions to get to where we want to be. "I have to make sure every player here next year is thoroughly committed to what we're doing and it was an opportunity for Will and he certainly wanted to explore it." The Rams boss also spoke about the conversation he had with Hughes ahead of the move. "We had the enquiry (from Watford) and I spoke to Will," said Rowett. "You always try to gauge what a player is thinking and how a player feels about it. "Will said to me after two difficult seasons he really felt he needed a new challenge. "I don't suggest for one minute he doesn't feel the same way about the club, because he does. He's grown up here being a big part of it, but when you hear a player say that you have to be open-minded." RadioactiveWaste
Reading that, it seems a bit mutual in Rowett being its going to be my way, committed, efficiency, direct and you can buy that and stay AND Hughes looking at still being in the championship, in a direction that doesn't suit him and an opportunity to play top flight. Reached a natural parting of the ways. Still annoyed at how cheap the price was, even with sell on and presumably a write off of some of the money on hydra/Anya its still annoying. Maybe the masterplan is to make us average too, so "being solid from the back" is justificated. No Hughes and defensive fullbacks is far from the football I enjoy watching, only way to appease me is results from now on. Promotion or sacking, it's a win-win situation for me. Unfortunately neither is bringing Will back. I share your sentiment, and take solace in the fact that the last time we were promoted, I was in shock when Billy immediately sold the first 2 names on the team sheet for a pittance. Hopefully, history will be repeated. I do think we have the best manager to get us over the line, but it does take some justificating.
lrm14
On 6/25/2017 at 12:24, Pearson said: I disagree totally with your point in building a team around Hughes. You build teams around players with presence, especially in the mid field engine room, aka Pogba, Kante, Alli, all with a phenomenal work rate, not frightened to put their foot in and who have the ability to dictate the game. I have never observed Hughes doing this for us in the Championship and how Watford expects him to do it the Premier for them is beyond me. If that is Silva’s vision I fear Watford will be in a relegation battle! You mention Hendrick, who I sated at the time we should not be selling if we are serious about getting promoted, but every player has a price. As opposed to Hughes, Hendricks has presence (but not to Pogbas etc level) and as a result has been a mainstay in the Burnley side. I tell you now Hughes will not be a main stay in the Watford side. Finally, I do not claim to know more than any other fan, just that in the case of Hughes I have a differing opinion which is largely backed up by professional managerial decisions. I had the pen name Pearson long before my namesake arrived here and to use this as an excuse to ridicule my points is really quite bizarre. Firstly, Chelsea and Spurs have not built their team around either of Kante or Alli. Conte was going to play a 3-4-3 regardless and Kante is the perfect midfielder for that, he was bought to supplement. Spurs built their team around Eriksen if anyone and are more focused on implementing Poch's style rather than catering to one player. Pogba has definitely not had a team built around him this season and he's also not known for having an engine, he's known for having exceptional technical abilities mainly his passing and shooting. So none of those examples work. If you want examples of teams being built around players see Messi and Ronaldo, or on a much lesser scale, Lukaku and Sigurdsson. Unless we're talking about physicality you clearly haven't watched a lot of Hughes if you think he has less of a presence than Hendrick. The rest of what you put is nonsensical because Silva is a significantly better manager than Rowett and he's decided to purchase Hughesy. Howe also tried to hijack the deal so you can add another better manager to the list of people who rate Hughes. Also I'm not a mind reader so I didn't know when you chose your name. It's not that crazy to presume that a person writing very questionable opinions on a forum, while having the same name as a fool who managed us, is in fact a fool. My mistake. Rab a dab doo
Every manager stands or falls by the decisions they make and GR will be no different. He is being both bold and brave in his decisions, only time will tell if this brings us what we all want achieve 'the premiership'
