How much for a future England international?

He added: “There’s been a few changes in the squad and the manager too, especially with Gareth (Southgate) previously who did so well with us and we ended up winning the Toulon Tournament.

“Hopefully that will stand us in good stead. You look at the players now, who have stepped up from the Under-21s and gone on to play for the senior team, I have played with a lot of them.

“That still gives me a great deal of motivation that I can get there too.”

Only 22, lots of his career ahead of Hughes, and why not an England call up? FFS if Jake Livermore can anyone can! Can't believe we'd sell him, isn't that what the Academy is for to bring youngsters through to the first team?!

I would pay nothing for a future England international. He would have to prove he is actually going to be capable of such a thing if it's going to effect his price. Personally I think he has gone as far as he can with us and if he wants to progress he needs to leave and play with players closer to his quality level.

It's incredible to see an England side with Keane, Livermore and Lingard in it. They were all extremely average for us.. where as Wisdom and Ibe haven't kicked on. Livermore was dire! I think it just goes to show how poor our international side is..

Errr and as Rowett is aiming for top 2 next season wouldn't that be us, in the Prem?!

I agree, he is starting to stagnate at Derby now. He's too good for the championship. For his sake a move to a mid table or above, good football playing side would do him the world of good. Everton perhaps. This needs to be his last season in the championship. Hopefully he can help us up, but if not wish him well elsewhere

I believe I commented something similar in the Will Hughes transfer thread before you jumped down my throat, @RoyMac5

To answer your question on why no England call up I can quote you from the same conversation:

He's 'missed' nearly two seasons, one thru injury the last thru being asked to play as many different roles as usually taken on by the Reduced Shakespeare Company!

He's oh so ancient at 22 years and two months, I bet he thinks his career is nearly over!

Oooh get you! :D

Had you read the Hughes quote about wanting to step up to England 1st team?

I genuinely hadn't read that interview! Anyway, just off to predict some lottery numbers.

Hughes will never get an senior England call while plying his trade at a average championship side.

I have been saying it along time now, he needs to be playing at a higher level for his own personal development.

His own game is suited to the Premiership more then the Championship. I'm guessing his build is what worries most people. Weird thing is I've seen him retain the ball a lot and rarely gets the ball taken off him without getting fouled.

He won't be plying his trade in the Championship forever. He's only 22. I asked before which midfielders are there bossing midfield at 22, cos I'm not aware of them.

He needs to play regularly, which plenty of 'young stars' signed by big clubs aren't doing, that's the point and he's made it too.

The upcoming Euro U21s tournament should be a good indication of how he's going post two 'bad' seasons.

How many games had he bossed the midfield last season, you have to be realistic he has become stagnant in our side. And this is the reason he needs to play at a much higher level than the championship, he really needs further development and will get better playing in a better competitive midfield and against better midfielders. Unless he moves on he may never move out of the championship.

I don't care how much, I don't was us to sell him. I don't give a toss about his progression, I care about Derbys and we will get there quicker with Hughes in the team than out.

selling our most technical players in Ince, Hughes and Martin would be a nightmare. It's those players that could step up if/when we get promoted. Why sell then have to buy players of that type once we go up spending probably more than what we got.

before anyone says "well we aren't in the prem" we will get there quicker with these players and have a better chance of staying there. Huddersfield have got a tall order next season as all there technical best players were loans and those gaps have to be filled.

There's hope for Derby players to get into the squad at some point. We were playing against Trippier, Vardy and Livermore not too long ago in the championship. I think if Hughes (or sneakily Thorne) were to go up with us or get moves to the PL, I'd expect them to have a shot at a call up.

Dont think Ince has a chance though, despite a player like Lingard being clearly no better than Nathan Redmond or 15/16 Marc Albrighton, Lingard continues to get the call up.

Personally I think it's more to do with

3 different managers, 3 different playing styles, 4+ formations and god knows how many midfield partners and positions he and they had to play. Butters, BJ, De Sart, Bryson, Hughes etc all playing at DM at some point all being shuffled around. When you do that it breaks down the confidence and know how of whether to sit or push up.

Until his knock against Leicester he looked great, after that he struggled, another new manager, another new formation, Christie at right back, it all adds up and there was no consistency.

I reckon next season he will be back to his old self with better players behind him and some consistency throughout the team

Looking at just a couple of similar sort of players who have come into the England set up in the last year or so(or around it), Jake Livermore and Fabian Delph were both playing a decent amount of games in the PL at 22 and they're no where near being regulars for the England squad now at 27. Scary how old they are now and they haven't lived up to that early promise. Hughes is in danger of falling into the same trap IMO.

I don't know how long we keep saying Hughes is "only" 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22... he's got to push on soon whether that be here or somewhere else because his career will be over before he knows it. I'd love to see him become a great player, that's what we all tipped him to be right?
