Cameras

Recommended Posts

Well, I've ventured in to the weird and wonderful world of cameras. I was always dubious about talking to anyone about cameras because I didn't have a frigging clue what they were on about. And I mean, how hard can it be? Really?

I'll keep the reasons for getting a decent camera to myself, for now, but I just bought a Canon 80D with the 18-135 STM lens.

Anyone?

I've always been Nikon, but it's just personal choice, and once you start you tend to stick with what you know, and lens fittings etc.

What sort of photography are you interested in?

Edit. Sorry about the last question! Just re read your post!

A great time to be buying a camera - the advanced features packed into most modern SLRs mean you don't really need to know much at all to get great photos - stick it on 'auto' and off you go - plus the advent of digital means you can snap away 'for free' and just delete the 'mistakes'. When I started with my Nikon film camera in the mid-1980s, I'd be lucky if I had more than 1 or 2 shots worth keeping on each roll (probably not significantly better than that now, but that's the beauty of trying to improve....)

Best advice is to get out there and use your camera - learn how to frame your shots, focusing the lens on different parts of the image, working out what makes a decent image and most importantly, how light can be used to alter the end result. You'll soon find yourself wanting to tweak the camera settings to make use of different lens apertures, but there's no rush - in fact probably the most important thing is to take your time - it's so easy to fire off a whole load of photos and then being disappointed with the results - the real satisfaction comes from working out what you're trying to achieve when you press the shutter release and then seeing the results. It's one of the reasons I still have a heap of film cameras despite having several 'all singing' digital bodies - old, slow film methods force me to slow down and re-assess what I'm trying to do....

Enjoy your new hobby - you might find it takes over your life....

Nice camera, pm me if you have any difficulties with it, is it for general use or something specific?

I suggested some readers wives type photography to the wife.

Ok she said...all excited.

When i stood there with a tub of vaseline she looked at me with anticipation and said ooh whats that for?

She got a bit upset when i smeared it over the lense.

LOL - like Les Dawson, but with a 'bit o'blue for the Dads.'

I have real trouble with my camera, maybe I should get a new one too.

Getting everyone to sit still for five minutes after the magnesium flash powder lamp has gone off is a right bu***r.

I use canon cameras scarborough and take a lot of photos. You do get better with practice.

Gaspode's advice is great. I would add one thing - buy one of the specialist photography magazines every month or so. They have articles that show how professionals and amateurs work, give good ideas and can be a very good source of advice on a whole range of stuff. The really good thing about digital is that you can make lots and lots of mistakes without it costing you anything other than time

Have fun, you and Mrs Scarborough.

Cheers, will do. Grabbed a tripod today and the biggest sd card I could without paying silly money (128 gb).

@scarboroughwa I hope you are getting on well with your photography,

I have Canon EOS 1200d and mainly do sports photography, just started a over a year ago and left it in "Sports Mode" was great till the winter and I was taking photos under floodlights. My photos was blurred. I went on a photography course and it was the best thing I ever did. I found once you understand exposure then the rest falls into place, Aperture and Shutter Speed are the main two get your head round, with ISO another key factor.

There is guy on youtube called Mike Browne, he does loads of 5 - 20 minute videos explaining different aspects of photography, from Aperture, Shutter Speeds to depth of field and composition. I found his videos really down to earth for example he would forget to take the lens cap off.

Started this up as a hobby with my missus this year. She has got a Nikkon jobbie although I am not sure of the make or model. She is mainly focusing on wildlife and nature. I got myself a gopro and a drone. Half tempted to stick my gopro on my cricket helmet whilst wicket keeping and batting to see what the footage comes out like.
