Anyone familiar with the "cryptocurrency" Bitcoin?

It confuses the hell out of me but i was clearing up my inbox at the weekend and came across an email from 2012 regards a bitcoin purchase i made for £4 (i vaguely remember buying a coin but had 2 children since then so my brain's reset itself). After much faffing i finally logged into the Bitcoin "wallet" and i actually have 0.7 of a coin which is apparently now worth $900 - https://blockchain.info/markets

Anyone else got a bitcoin?????? I have no idea how to cash it in and don't think i will (just yet) anyway for the £4 it cost.

Bitcoin works much like other currency, but you don't have it as cold hard cash.

Naturally, as its use has become more widespread, its value has rocketed against the dollar/pound/yen doubling in 6 months.

If you want to cash in, its just like exchanging travel money, just have to find an online exchange that deals in bitcoin. https://www.bitpanda.com/ for example

Depends on how much you need spare cash. The value at the moment is about the best it has ever been. I had a mate who was in a similar position and he sold his around thar spike in late 2013. He was pretty pleased with himself when he watched the value tank over the next two years. But if he'd hung in there he'd have made even more. Most speculators don't like XBT as its too volatile. If it were me, I'd get rid and have a holiday :)

Just read this

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/13/north_korea_swells_war_chest_with_bitcoin

Whether true or not I've long had the feeling that the expansion of Bitcoin as a workable currency goes against too many interests in the world economy. This may or may not be a pretext to shutting it down or making it is discredited.

If I had any bitcoins right now (and I don't) I'd probably cash out fairly soon

A bitcoin was worth £320 on April 27th. Right now, it's worth £13271!!

Your 0.7 would be worth £9290 now!

please tell me you kept it!

Yeah I heard about it years ago and didn't buy because I thought it was a bit culty and it was full of scammers back then. When the big players liquidate the asset after it stops growing it'll collapse.

Bitcoin is utterly useless as a form of payment - if it is ever a real currency it'll have to be done separately as a form of free currency and 'cleared' through banks.

I kept hold of it in the end and also bought a Litecoin and Ethereum coin, both of which have shot up 200-400% since i bought them. I know it's a gamble but the BTC cost me £4, the LTC £38 and the ETH was the most expensive at £200.

I sold some Bitcoin last week which more than covered the original investment and will now wait and see what happens before deciding when to sell more.

The bubble has been about to burst for the past year.
