aaaaaand he's instantly released a statement where he has essentially said:

  • It's not his fault
  • He did bet on the teams he was playing for at the time to lose
  • If it wasn't him the ban wouldn't have been as lengthy

I think the length of ban reflects breaching the integrity of the sport.

Even if his bets were "honest" punts on what HD thought would happen - the suspicion will be he better then influenced the result to win the bet.

It is harsh on him, but its one of those where the sport has to be seen to be very hard on those whos actions could bring the integrity into question.

But on the other hand, its Joey Barton ?

And that's why they've used him as an example to others.

Would Dele Alli, for example, have received an 18 month ban? Not a chance!
