Great all for it, when Martin got injured and Bent came in we failed. Bents been just about 1st choice this season in Martins absence and hey ho we've failed. So In short I love Martin and am delighted with his contract extension.

I think thats a bit unfair on bent, i thought he did well that first season. I'd say the reason we failed was more down to George Thorne being injured, along with his two back ups.

I am not saying thats the reason we failed this season, i dont know, but we continulally try and play with a defensive midfielder but with square pegs.

Maybe and hope so. But whoever is behind this contract and recent transfer dealings needs a come to Mel meeting and then a swift goodbye!

Well exactly, surprised no one has brought up that if Bent has 'score 10 or more goals in your final year of the contract then we it will trigger a renewal' or anything of that ilk is a very silly thing to put in a contract as basically he could score 10 goals by the end of January then drop off because he knows his future is secured (im not implying directly that it did, but..yeah)

The "bent is always offside" myth is gathering pace i see.

As a forward who plays on the shoulder, looks for through balls in and around the area to finish i would be expecting him to be caught offside a lot. In a recent game he came on and got caught offside straight away, however he made a run, didn't get the ball slipped in, changed the angle of his run to get back onside, still didn't get the ball slipped in, moved round the back of the defender, made a third run and eventually the ball got slipped in too late to take advance of his run as the pass was needlessly delayed.

A striker being offside isn't always because he is too lazy or to crap to read the line. Sometimes the pace of the service needs to be questioned too.

If we play a 5ft5 striker up front on his own and lump it at his head, is he crap and lazy because he doesn't win any headers? If we tried to spin the balls down the channels for a big target man to chase is he crap and lazy because he doesn't have the pace to get onto the ball?

Bent is probably not the answer, but that depends on his team mates utilising his strengths.

I would be surprised to see us with all 4 of these on our books come August.

Ok so we have 4 strikers

games to goals average:

1st- Darren bent 2.56

2nd wardrobe 2.97

3rd matej vydra 3.52

4th beef nugget 3.66

statistically proven most prolific striker we have.  Well deserved contract extension.

He is taking the place of someone who could do a job for us not just warm the bench. I'm not in the know but am lead to believe his wages are astronomical, but besides that he gives us nothing absolutely nothing. I thought we were going to move forward, this shows to me we're going know where fast. So disappointed, I can't actually believe it to be honest.

I personally wouldnt have resigned him, but as others have said maybe we have to.

I think the issue with the contract he signed is we were still in that period before Mel was properly in charge of the club so its hard to say its his fault. And he did score 12 goals from 17 appearances when he was on loan so it was pretty decent form. If someone else can do a better job then they will be bought in. He wont have it in his contract he has to be on the bench as hes been dropped from the matchday squad previously.

I'd have more faith in Benty coming off the bench and nabbing a goal than any other Derby striker.

No idea what he gets paid, but if it was an automatic extension I'm sure the purse string holders have budgeted for it, and if i was through choice the same applies.

At least those wages have been on the pitch the majority of the time, rather than in the treatment room or left out the squad altogether.

Oh, how will we cope? An experienced pro, who has adequately filled the striker role when needed and scored 13 goals this season, including some pretty important ones, has signed on for one more year. I know what time it is:

Jesus wept a differing opinion and I'm labelled a wrist slasher. just my opinion that we are wasting money on a player who gives us nothing (again my opinion) . No wrist slashing here pal, if I was I wouldn't of renewed in Feb

Who scored.com

even shocked me to be fair. When I heard it I had to check myself. Check my previous post about goals to game as well. Maybe it will calm you down about the extension. :)

Haha I'm not sure anything can calm me down on this one, guess Darren and I just will never be!! Goals in winning games now that would be a good stat....

With respect to this whole new set of Bent lovers that have popped up today, he's garbage, he's not young, and now we have a failed player taking an impt spot and blocking the way for a young player like Zanzala or a player we could have acquired cracking through. Very disappointing unless we had no choice or this is just a prelude to securing him a small money transfer.

You have a point, hopefully with Martin back next season normal service will be resumed. Bent will be back up.

Why is he blocking the way for Zanzala?

Surely if Zanzala is good enough he will get in the team/on the bench ahead of Bent?

And surely Zanzala can be learning from an ex England international whose scored everywhere he's ever played.

Exactly, Hughes and Hendrick didn't have to wait for older players to move on. They got in on merit.

This was the quote, for those interested:

"I’ve got another year on my contract so I’ll be here next season.

"I’ve been happy here, we’ve got a good bunch of lads down here. In previous seasons we’ve not quite got there, but the club is going in the right direction, we’ve got good backing and we’ve got good players. So as long as we can hold on to them and make one or two additions I think we’ll be fine."

Well that means a squad overhaul/wage bill slashing will not happen this year anyway.

Not a "Bent lover" by any stretch , but you can't deny he does a job. 88 minutes 2-2 , who else to bring on to poach you a goal ? .
