Ghost of Clough
Based off who has played in what position so far this season, you can figure out squad numbers to sufficiently get through the season, and also get a slight indication on how many youths could have featured. Position: Number of starts per player GK: 41 RB: 22, 19 CB: 37, 34, 7, 4 LB: 25, 8, 3, 2, 2, 1 CM: 27, 26, 26, 20, 8, 2, 1 RW: 33, 3, 3, 2 AM: 4, 2, 1, 1, 1 LW: 21, 10, 4, 3, 1, 1, 1 CF: 20, 12, 7, 3, 3 So with a first team squad of something along these lines (bolded players starting): Carson, Baird, Christie, Keogh, Shackell (or Pearce), Lowe, Forsyth, Thorne, Johnson, Hughes, Butterfield (or Bryson), Ince, Russell, Anya, Vydra, Nugent, Martin. Available players: Pearce (or Shackell), Olsson, Bryson (or Butterfield), Camara, Weimann, Blackman, Bent A squad like this could give youths like Rawson, Elsnik, Hanson, Bennett, Vernam 5-10 games each but would have had a minimal impact on results (in my opinion). Of course, the players we can't get rid of in the summer would fill gaps too. I see us looking for a young CF similar to Martin/Nugent. One who will feature prodominantly for the U23s. I can't see any incoming players for the first team without several players leaving first.

I'm glad that I am not the only one who thinks this way. I thought it was a girl thing but obviously not! The endless permutations of slightly adjusted personnel and formations on a screen leave me blank. I like to see fluid, quick powerful football not theoretical team line-ups. It's like when the sub is coming on, itching to get on the pitch and the coach is thrusting bits of paper under his nose! Maybe that's sometimes a language issue but it always makes me chuckle! Each to their own though and I am sure plenty love reading these threads (there's always plenty of them.)
Anag Ram
I can't understand how posters on here think we will get promoted with largely the same squad. There is something toxic in the dressing room which inhibits the team. I don't see a confident bunch. I think we need four new faces at least in the starting line-up and we can't rely on players who have been out for an entire season to miraculously transform our fortunes. We need competition in goal, two new full backs (though I rate both Baird and Forsyth), at least one dominant centre half, two midfielders and a quick physical forward. Now it may be that the introduction of these new players is the spur some current players need. I also think that Nugent is Martin with pace. Getting rid of 6-8 current squad members will be the tricky bit.

So which old players are no longer new players? All of them? Anya, Vydra, Nugent are they new or old?

It isn't about speculating over future formations and team selections etc. the emphasis is on looking at how we don't actually need this huge clear out/upheaval many are requesting. jagerbob
Angie is spot on. P.S I have no faith that Thorne will ever play consistantly or be able to reach the same levels, after more injuries than i have had hot dinners, nor do i think Hughes is any use in defensive midfield.
