Nothing says 'rough' quite like where I lived in 1967-8. My father took a pub after leaving the army, and our first one was the Queen's Arms on St Annes Well Road, Nottingham. The old saying "Where there's muck, there's brass" could never be more wrong - it was gut-wrenchingly poor and squalid.

Did I mention my best friend was a prostitute, she lived opposite me, my neighbour to the left (my left not yours) was a drug dealer and the chap that lived alone on the opposite corner had his house burnt to the ground because he was a little bit different and yes he was still in it at the time, the guy that ran the ice-cream van pulled a gun on me when I was 8, obviously growing up with four brothers he didn't last long, my brother served ten years inside for knocking ten bells out him and he didn't bother me again, Derby rough my arse

welcome to my council estate...

When I had finished school my parents took me to a retirement village :(, imagine being 16 and living with old folks, I used to listen to stories from my new neighbour, bent as a nine bob note he was, proper camp he was and he made me scream with laughter with his stories of his time in the forces, bingo was good on a Friday night in the community hall though, never won so fraud was evident from the outset

A man after my own heart.I live in a decent area but you still get ***** around .We had builders down our cul de sac and to say they were were inconsiderate would be an understatement .So I went down and asked them to be a bit more considerate to which I received blank looks and then abuse .I am in my sixties and two of the builders were built like brick out house's in their 30's and the older one must have been six foot four easily .

Fair enough I say but you will comply even if I come back and baseball bat the three of you.Hour later cop car pulls up and I get a visit .We have had a complaint from someone, you have threatened them ,I replied look mate they are taking the mick I am an old man and they are big lads and much younger .

Did you threatened them with a baseball bat ? Yes of course I did have you seen the size of them at which the copper burst out laughing and said at least you are honest . He went down and had a word came back and asked me not to go near them again .

Ten minutes later I go by giving them the bird just to let them know where they stood .I like to think it's local community  self policing .

As a lad in the 1950s we were considered posh because we had curtains. We lived in Abingdon Street just off London Road next to the really rough area of Cotton Lane, Graham St and Russell St. Not sure but I think that's all been demolished now.

Your Derby geography knowledge is up the spout. Abingdon St. runs between Osmaston Rd. and Osmaston Park Rd.

Yep sorry. Osmaston Road. I was born at 49 Abingdon Street and lived there till I was 8. Went to St Dunstan's School. Then went to 125 Dairyhouse Road another not too salubrious area (though very near the BBG) before moving to the relatively nice part of Chaddesden at 61 Valley Road when I was 14

Take the point about Allenton because it is a rubbish area to live in but having grown up around there, I've got to say it's not as bad as certain areas of Normanton and Chaddesden. I don't think there's anywhere in Derby that's really bad, save a few streets. There's good and bad areas in each part of Derby.

Having said that, there's very few places in Derby I'm happy walking around in past midnight... Not the friendliest city you'll ever see but there's nowhere that's really "the ghetto"
