Martin - The Third Way

There seems to be an impasse on here between those wanting Martin back as he is seen as the Holy Grail to resurrect the free flowing 433 of McClaren's first 18 months on charge and others who see him as a one trick pony who can't/won't adapt to other systems.

Rowett seems to like both a 433 and a 4231. So could Martin play behind a quicker striker as an advanced midfield player? He started out as an attackibg midfielder and often used to drop deep into the hole for Derby. The problem then was often that he would lay the ball out wide and when a quick cross went in he was still getting into a position. This would be eliminated with someone quicker in front. Also if we needed/wanted to play a long ball for him to flick on, the CBs have to make a decision to challenge him and risk leaving a 1 on 1 behind them or letting him head it on or bring it down.

In an ideal world the fast striker in front would be a decent footballer do they could interchange.

Yes i know it's another Martin thread but can this be one restricted to what happens on the pitch, not contracts and personal vendettas

Well done. First place in the predictability stakes.

You always were one for coming first.

Better to come first rather than not at all.

Honestly Sage, l am totally fed up to the back teeth of hearing about Chris Martin. I am beginning to develop the same anti-feelings as Gwyneth Paltrow's mother.

Onto the thread topic, I can see no reason at all why  Martin, Nugent & Vydra can't fill either of the central attacking roles in a 4-2-3-1 - whether that's Martin behind Nugent or Vydra, Vydra behind Nugent or Martin, or Nugent behind Vydra or Martin.

I bought some of these once, but they weren't very good, they kept falling down.

That's the third time today my words have made someone spit liquid out, though only two were on this forum.

It's easy to get two sister's names mixed up at my age.

I said in a different thread this would be a good combination. Also if you have a front 4 with 2 of Martin, Vydra and Nugent then Russell and Ince, there is certainly a flexibility within the 4 that you could change little things during the game, at one point you could have;

Ince Vydra Russell

Martin

Which could easily change to

Russell Martin Ince

Vydra

Or

Russell Ince Vydra

Martin

Or even

Ince Martin Vydra

Russell

You could swap Nugent in for Martin and still have the same effect, and flexibility. We also have Anya that can play on either wing, Blackman can do a job in a few positions, maybe Camara.

One thing we never seem to utilise is our players being able to play more than one position throughout the match. We saw it for a while against forest with Russell and Vydra swapping.
