We had a pork loin joint in the freezer as a treat over Easter.

Roast with all the trimmings on Sunday.

Pressure cooked with all the veggies on Monday.

Cold with jacket spuds and salad on Tuesday.

Curried with rice etc on Wednesday.

I am now spending hours trying to clean the black burnt on gunge from the pressure cooker!

Life is anything but boring for shut-ins at Chez Brummie!

Keep safe all!

Did you chill on Sunday?

Boiled haddock, mashed potatoes, (we were out of whole potatoes) with crackling hot lamb fat on top

Raised on this stuff, 3 times a week at least

I might try Emo Philips's recipe for Hasty Pudding later...

1. Preheat oven to 800 degrees.
2. Pour 1 and 5/4th cups of milk into a large pot.
3. Mix.
4. Drive to store for cornmeal.
5. Stir cornmeal into the milk.
6. Add three pounds of coleslaw (OPTIONAL).
7. Drive to store for molasses.
8. Add 217/434ths cups of molasses.
9. Look around for raisins.
10. Curse.
11. Drive to store for raisins.
12. Add nine.
13. Search whole house for lousy stinking nutmeg.
14. Kick oven.
15. Hop around on one foot, cursing.
16. Drive to stupid stinking store for stupid stinking lousy blasted nutmeg.
17. Cashier says, predictably, "Oh, fancy seeing YOU here again" remark.
18. Drive home after being beaten by pig-faced stock-boys.
19. Put key in front door, causing spark which explodes house full of gas that escaped from oven after kick caused pilot light to go out.

Serves Four

I made Thai green curry tonight. No photo, but if anyone wants the recipe...

  • 2 chicken breast portions, diced
  • 1 brown onion
  • 4 spring onions, chopped
  • 4 sticks celery, chopped
  • 4 sprigs sprouting broccoli, chopped
  • 250 grams chestnut mushrooms, sliced
  • 100 grams green beans, chopped
  • 400 ml coconut milk
  • good handful of fresh coriander, chopped
  •  1 teaspoon lemongrass paste
  •  1 inch piece root ginger, half grated, half cut into matchsticks
  • 8 cloves garlic
  • 250 ml chicken stock
  • half a jar Thai green curry paste (ASDA - actually not bad)
  • 2 teaspoons Thai fish sauce
  • 1 green Bird's Eye chilli, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste

Fry the onion in olive oil until translucent

Add garlic, lemongrass, grated ginger, continue to fry for 1 minute

Add chicken, continue to fry for 5 minutes

Add chicken stock, coconut milk, curry paste, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes

Chuck everything else in except for spring onions, ginger matchsticks and coriander, cover and simmer for another hour.

Add spring onions, ginger matchsticks and coriander, stir and serve with Thai sticky saffron rice.

It was excellent, and the Memsahib came back for seconds.

Christ! Isn't @6 inches meant to be about average!

Oh i´m normal all over, except height wise and mentally and being left handed and my appetite for singed faces of sheep, blood sausages, pickled rams testicles, soured whale blubber, rotten basking shark and skate.

On second thought, strike that, i am a freak

A standard Monday night dinner then! I have some Icelandic friends who introduced me to some 'delicacies' when they were living in Iffley Village in Oxford. We were neighbours. The food I could cope with but they used to force me to drink some green tasting liquor called something like Strohm I think. Potent but absolutely disgusting ? They're back in Reykjavik now otherwise I'd be a fully fledged alcoholic instead of just part-time.

Hmm, i found something called Stroh rum from Austria but it is not green by the looks of it.  Could it be Tópas?  It's a thick green local spicy yuck that makes the eyes water, but does it's job i suppose.  Brennivín spirits is in a green bottle and tastes repulsive.  That was done on purpose back in the old days to keep people from becoming alcoholics.  Shows how little they understood that affliction back then lol.  A Brennivín burp can knock out an adolescent bull.

Yep, your friends sound like typical Icelanders, fully capable of drinking the average Russian under the table.  Glad you are rid of them for now and have your functioning liver back.

Now it makes sense why i was so crook after a night on the turps over there last year. The locals in the bar were feeding me all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff.
