My thinking is Russell on right midfield new lad and carma on the left midfield.

So where will Ince be playing then? Or are you dropping him to the bench?

After 2 league defeats on the bounce we need some Anya and Nugent love in the team to rally the troops, hopefully Anya and Olsson will both be back to allow this. Bench isn't looking particularly strong for this one which is a concern. Would take a point now if offered.

Not a fan of Carma then?

These types of formations just don't work with those players.  The ball gets played into the 2 midfielders, all of the 4 forwards start making runs forward, and the midfielders have no one to pass to.  It's exactly what was going wrong with Pearson's system.  If you want to play a 4231 like this, you absolutely need a player to play 'in the hole' that grabs hold of the game and controls it - they need to be getting on the ball, and dictating the game.  We don't have anyone that can do that.  Hughes is the closest, but it's not really his game.  It absolutely can't be an out and out dribbler like Ince or Vydra.

Continue losing the midfield battles with just one holder and neither more advanced midfielders being able to get close enough to the striker and more importantly chip in with goals

You ever seen Cool Runnings? the sprinters that just missed out on the Olympics switching sport so they could compete. His performance against Leeds reminded me of their first attempt down the hill on the sled with wheels.

Vydra keeps his place as it wasn't his position, Camara has no excuses.

I'd start Vydra up top against his former club. Hopefully he wants to prove a point after the criticism he got last week, it clearly hurt him.

Must win is an understatement. Yes it's only Jan, but losing anymore ground on the top 6 at this stage could be fatal

I'd start him for this one. And Russell got to start as long with Hughes and Pearce.

Completely agree.

Carson

Baird Keogh Pearce Olsson/Anya (whoever is fit)

De Sart

Hughes Butterfield

Ince Vydra Russell

Would like to see that but unfortunately Butterfield is suspended for this one and he will be back next week as long with Johnson.

Isn't Butterfield still suspended for this one?

The thing is what has Vydra done to deserve starting the game upfront when he's looked almost completely ineffective when played there ?

So you've got Hughes sitting a lot deeper to help shield the back 4, and Ince pushing right on to support the striker.  All that happens then, is we get a massive gap between the forwards and the midfield, the forwards get no service and struggle to score, and we get no ball retention in the final third which puts the back 4 under pressure.

The main problems aren't losing the midfield battle and lack of support for the strikers.  The main problems are lack of tempo when we pass the ball, and lack of ball retention up front.  The lack of tempo is what's causing us to get swamped in midfield - players are holding onto the ball for too long and giving the opposition the chance to press them, instead of passing it quickly and moving into space to give the guy they've passed to an out-ball.  The lack of ball retention is what's causing the lack of support up front - the balls goes forward, and it's lost before support even has chance to get anywhere near.

We need to get our better technical players on the pitch to improve the tempo - i.e. no Shackell at the back, and no Johnson in midfield.  And we need to find some way of keeping the ball in the final third - Vydra and Bent aren't doing it, so Nugent needs to be given a go.  And assuming he can hold the ball up a bit better, we need someone breaking from midfield to actually support the forwards, which will have to be Bryson, given who we have available.

The most important thing about this match will be the fans. If we turn up simply thinking reading are going to turn up, roll over and have their tummy tickled then it will be a very long match for some.

place your bets on when you will hear groans for us keeping the ball with a few sideways and backwards passing or when you hear someone shout "get it forward"
