If like buttons (a way of showing agreement) do not kill discussion why would dislike buttons.

because it discourages people from stating controversial or unpopular opinions what in turn limits discussion and leads to an echo chamber. Having likes doesn't do much to alter discussion as popular posts are most likely good posts.

It's there, I'm just waiting for the software guys to take a look as it's crashing database tables for some reason
