Rooney's problem isn't being past his best, a lack of skill, ability, nothing of the sort.

Rooney's problem is wanting to be involved, influence the game, you can see his frustration when the team is playing crap, gets drawn further back trying to take control, making silly fouls leaving his position and looking lost at times which can effect the team as a whole.

He's a winner, used to the silverwear under Ferguson where as the majority of the squad are used to finishing 4th, 5th.

It's this willingness to play anywhere on the pitch which allowed Fergie to use him all over, what he should have done is nailed more discipline into him, reminded Rooney this is professional football not a school playground.

You have Rooney in position as a striker you have 30 goals a season. Easy.

Past his best before and sell buy date.

Playing in a fictional role as he cannot play in his original role.

Kept in the side for sentiment rather than skill.
