And Ecuador, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Mexico are all better than Holland. Why do they bother with these.

Well, judging by a head to head game not so long ago I'd say Wales aren't better than us.

Sums FIFA up really if they honestly think Wales are better than England.

They need to get rid of these stupid 'official rankings' and 'seeding' of teams and just get back to playing football competitions.

So we know who to seed highest in qualification groups. It's perfectly reasonable that the Netherlands have plummeted down the rankings. They've been awful for the last two years.

It is based on performances and results with quality of opposition, etc taken into account. Wales did a lot better than us in the Euro's hence the jump in their ranking. They also finished top of our group, beat Russia and Slovakia both of whom we failed to beat and demolished Belgium. 

They are better than us based on recent performances and FIFA are correct to rank them above us. I don't know why you would think we are better than Wales if you have watched any recent England games.

Why is that surprising? Hungary, Slovakia and Romania all qualified for Euro 2016, whilst the Netherlands finished 4th behind Turkey, Iceland and the Czech Republic and 5 points behind third place. The rankings aren't based on past glories - they are based on how they perform now.

Holland are s*** to be fair, managed 1 draw and 5 defeats against Czech, Turkey and Iceland in their 2016 qualifying group. Nevertheless the FIFA rankings are pointless nonsense and we'd be better off if we simply ignored them.

Depends how recent we are talking?

I watched us during the Euros where we were poor and still beat Wales.

I also watched us in qualifying where we were the only team with a 100% record.

And in the friendlies where we beat Portugal, Germany and France.

Let's be honest here, we had a p*ss easy group in the qualifying. The only difficult game in that group was Switzerland and they were going through a mini crisis at the time with a change of manager after the world cup.

We beat Portugal in the friendly but we didn't look convincing at all in terms of tactical and formation play as both Kane and Vardy were too far wide. 

In the Germany game, whilst we played very well on the counter, Germany completely took their foot of the gas in the second half and their defence lost the plot when Hummels went off at half time. That was a completely freak result in my eyes as the Germans didn't look motivated in the 2nd half, as some of them had important league and champions league games coming up so didn't want to get injured.

I'm completely ignoring the France game because that was a few days after the Paris terror attacks and it was clear the French players didn't want to play, I was surprised at the time that it even went ahead.

The sooner we get rid of this arrogance that because we are England, we have got a God given right to beat all before us, the better as it puts unnecessary pressure on the players.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking England up here, we are very average at the moment but to suggest Wales are better than us is laughable.

If we are going to belittle England's victories then let's compare them to Wales:-

Beat Slovakia due to a bad goalkeeping error

Lost to England

Beat a Russia team that were already on their way home

Beat Northern Ireland due to an own goal

Beat a poor Belgium team

Lost to an even poorer Portugal team who failed to win a game up to that stage

It's easy to do things like that.

Fifa and UEFA are first foremost money making oligarchies. 

I can see that a system that helps to generate tournaments where the teams that have the largest following - either fans or TV audience- have a bias to progress further would be helpful to the money making objective

Hence seeding according to some rankings system. 

It certainly is not a league or objective in itself. Expect more rule tweaks to ensure that England Germany France and Italy couldn't be drawn altogether as a wc group.

Started in the same group, got further in the tournament. Indicates being a better side
