FORMER Derby County and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper John Middleton has died, aged 59.

Middleton, born in Lincoln, played for the England Youth team in 1975 and represented England Under-21s while at Forest, winning three caps.

He helped Forest win promotion from the Second Division in 1976-77 before he joined the Rams in a £25,000 deal which included an exchange in which Archie Gemmill went to Forest.

Middleton made 80 appearances for Derby before a persistent shoulder injury forced him to retire in 1980.

He played 90 times for Forest.
