:lol:He played in 4-4-2 week in week out for Utd!!! The problem was trying to shoe horn Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham into the 4 which meant Scholes was put on the left, so he retired from international football.

That's what I meant haha, meant to put "  " around the word fit. Lampard and Gerrard only got in over Scholes in centre mid due to their athleticism. Scholes was a great player, I believe we would have won something if we played him in his best position. It wasn't even that complicated to fit Scholes into the side! He could as easily played in a midfield/forward line like this

Beckham Lampard Scholes J.Cole

                   Gerrard

                   Rooney

Agree with everything  apart from this apart, I actually think it would be the opposite. His midfield work is appreciated more in England but if he was foreign and performed he wouldn't get acknowledged either as midfielders aren't appreciated. Look at the likes of Kroos, Busquets, Modric, Verrati, Iniesta, all are brilliant but aren't given the appreciation they truly deserve as they are midfielders and it's only fashionable to score goals.

I dunno, I've seen the hype up Pogba's bum. And Xhaka only has to sneeze and it's the best sneeze ever.

The problem is trends. It's uber cool to find the next wonderkid. Then all he has to do is be anywhere near as good as somebody who's been doing it 10 years and you chuck the veteran in the bin and all hail the 5 yard pass of the next Eusebio.

It's trendy to find a half decent player who's relatively unknown.

Like Xhaka.

What a player!!

Look at that tackle!!

Look at the simplicity of his passing!!

This guy is owning the tournament!!

Build a statue!!

If Alex Song was here doing it then I wonder if we'd have highlight reels. Been doing it years. At a high level. Proven. And totally ignored because everyone knows him

I have no idea, but I suspect outside of England Rooney is rated pretty highly, it says a lot that China wanted him as the face of their new league rather than all the other guys they could have bought.

If Pogba was English, he'd probably be seen as lazy and crap. FourFourTwo ran a piece the other day which said that the French generally don't think much of him at international level and Deschamps dropping him wasn't met with much controversy. We just have a tendency to see our own players as average and overrated if the national team isn't doing really well.

Just showed Wales for what they are I'm afraid...... Could be sitting here after Monday evening with them bottom of the group..... Avoid defeat at all costs from them today. Can't blame them in a way.....

Lets hope I don't see Sterling starting for England again.

Thought Alli was way off it today, Kane also. Thought Lallana did well until he ran out of steam.

It was coming..... Rooney MOM.

Walker for me me owd.

That crying Welsh fan was hilarious.

Why didn't they go back to him at full time?

Yep he certainly was, and it was 1-1, his mates had dragged him along and he thought he was off to see Tom Jones live supported by the Stereocronics and instead he had to watch the poxy football........"Made in Wales, Made In Wales"....sing up!

Great result for N Ireland.

Roy got out of jail in my view and nearly paid the price for persisting with out of form players.

Should make changes for next game - including giving fraser forster the gloves. Alli and Kane need a rest. Vardy and sturridge and rashford are all good enough to start but let's stop playing the "can we fit all roys favourites into one XI" game.

I admire his endeavour and athleticism just wish he was a tad smarter sometimes. I thought Rooney played a real captains game, in control of everything.

He'll certainly have tougher games if we progress that's for sure!

Don't forget at the time you had a fit Owen. We needed a manager with the balls to say look Gerrard/Lampard sorry but you are on the bench this game and you need to earn your shirt. Instead Sven wanted to play all of them and just made the better player, at the time certainly, retire.

Can't help feel our national team has been mismanaged for quite a few years. But then hindsight is a wonderful thing ?

I'd only make one change - Sturridge in for Sterling. We need to keep up momentum by playing a reasonably settled side. Hopefully Kane and Alli can get firing but the best way for them to do that is by starting in a side that works.

Vardy must start, he saved our Euro necks from getting hammered in the next round by one of best teams.

Call it "resting" but there were 4 off days between Russia and Wales. There are only 3 until the next match.

If Kane and alli look heavy legged today they are not likely to look more lively in the next match.

Roy could tell them they'll be back for the ko stage.but we have to use the squad better rather than just wearing out 11 of them.

How exactly? He didn't do much today, except for the goal which was gifted by Williams. Sturridge was much more important to the win.

Vardy is a good player but right now he's more important to us as an impact sub. Kane offers a different kind of threat whilst Vardy and Sturridge are pretty similar.

I don't particularly want to go into the KOs with two key attacking players not firing. Giving them a rest is pointless if they do f*ck all. If we have to play a good team in the next round I could see Roy starting someone like Henderson or Wilshere instead of Alli anyway.
