Brave and intriguing appointment. I disagree somewhat with Muespach's first line, Phil Neville seems to have done well as a coach in his time.

I'll be watching this with great interest, pretty fascinating.

Could see a lot of interest from Valencia for English players.

It's only for the season... doubt they're going to open the cheque book too wide in January.

Phill just can't catch a break. Not content with being a better player and pundit Gary has upstaged his coaching gig now as well.

Can't imagine this wasn't done without Phil's recommendation.

Why is everyone so confident that Gary Neville will make a good manager? I find it astonishing that someone who's entire coaching experience is sitting on the England bench has landed the top job at a club as prestigious as Valencia.

Just checked the Valencia owner. Peter Lim. Gary and Phil's business partner at Salford. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

Really hope he does well. Young English coach and seems to be passionate enough and talks a lot of sense.

Expect he will be the next England boss after this tournament, hence the contract only lasting until June. Would be nice for him to get his career off to a good start and learn some things from La Liga that he can bring to the England squad.

Is there any football fan that thinks Gary will not be brilliant at the job? He will be brilliant and the England job at some point.

Yes, me. Neville is a really driven and smart guy, so there's a chance he can succeed. He has no experience of management at all though. Apparently everybody now thinks that delivering pre prepared talking points on Sky makes him some kind of genius. If Valencia had appointed Ray Lewington everybody would be laughing their heads off, so why is Neville afforded some legitimacy just because he's on the telly?

Fair point Anon. In my opinion he has an understanding of football greater than any other admittedly, unproven manager. He has succeeded at everything else in football so far though..

You never really hear Neville being linked with being the next Man United manager yet Giggs is despite them playing probably the most boring football for as long as I can remember but then he gets what is a big job in Spain.

Have to agree with Anon, plenty of knowledgable people in the game, sat in chairs on Sky Sports with us all nodding in agreement with their fancy touch screens, watching the game through freeze frames and replays.

He's on the touchline now, none of that technology and will have to make decisions from a whole different perspective, not just that, how are his man management skills? how will he cope with the players behind the scenes being numero uno, picking the team, the backroom staff, how is his eye for a player, will he try bringing English players over?

It's not a give he will be a success at all, I find it an interesting appointment, especially the relationship between the pair being owners of one club and employer and employee at another.

The owner has gone out on a Peter Lim(b) for him :)

Great appointment I think tbh.

Ironic that some question the appointment and his ability to step up and become a number one, when we have gone through a similar experience with our own manager.  All managerial appointments are gambles, I would put money on him being a success though.
