Charlton Athletic

Dear Fans,

Last Sunday, some individuals did not come to The Valley to watch the game and support the team, but came to create disorder on the pitch and interfere with the players and the game. Disorder which is, allegedly, needed to drive change in ownership and management.

Whom would they expect the club to be sold to? How long would a sales process take? Is it easier to sell the club when it is in League One rather than Championship?

Some individuals seem to want the club to fail. This is a confused approach, since following this logic leads to exactly the opposite of what we all want: staying in the Championship.

Allegations regarding the CEO are misrepresented* and are continuously used as a method to discredit and fuel personal abuse, hatred and with a risk to personal safety.

Although certain individuals tell you it does not happen, in recent weeks Roland Duchatelet has met the fans, the CEO has met with several different groups of fans and the communications team have attended several fans meetings.  We will continue these meetings and constructive dialogue with fans.

We have 9 games left in which we have to get 6 points more than our competitors.

The team just got 7 points out of 3 games.

We still have the chance to make it happen with the support of the fans until the very last game. We must believe it is still possible. Every football fan knows the 12th man is a crucial factor in the success on the pitch.

*I think the difference is also because fans don't see themselves as customers and {…} they go to the restaurants with their families every week and they go to the cinema but if they aren't satisfied with the product will they go and scream to the people in charge of it? No they don't, but they do it with a football club and that's very weird (meaning unique) because they feel a sense of ownership of a football club and that's a really difficult balance of how you try and engage with fans and make them, incorporated into some of the decisions of the club, {…}.

It's all ballhooks anyway. The demonstration had value to it and I hope the fans are successful in getting rid of the belgians, but it didn't impact on Charlton's performance anyway, quite the opposite in fact.

The beachballs were just after kick off so didn't really have any impact and the whistles were only blown when Boro were attacking their box to cause confusion, like when Gaston broke through on goal and abruptly stopped due to the whistle.

As for the guy invading the pitch that only served to break up play when Boro were attacking and 1 down.

It's not like such cynical acts were totally necessary what with Boro being disjointed with all the off-field hooha.

If they escape unpunished though I can see other clubs' fans bringing whistles to the match too and pitch invading when your team have a lead to protect. Why not, when it gives your team an advantage?

Reads more like a post on here than it does an official statement. Especially that last bit - just bizarre.

And the timing is atrocious. Just when you want to get the fans on side, you potentially alienate them further by effectively deflecting on to the paying spectators.

The last bit is not just bizarre, it's complete and utter bull$hit, especially the restaurant analogy. If I went to a restaurant and the service and product was far from satisfactory then I'd certainly raise my concerns. And if the response to my complaints wasn't appropriate then the last thing I'd do is come back for a meal another 22 times in the next 9 months.

Not so much the content - fully agree with you there - its more the presentation, the fact that its a footnote and is edited like a transcription..

Restaurant customers don't give a toss about the running, well being and future plans of the restaurant and will certainly not fork out money and support when there are problems in the kitchen and the menu has gone to hash.  Preposterous and outrageous analogy.  It's not the private business of any so called owner how he treats a football club.  If they think they are anything but caretakers, the real owners, the fans can, have and will set them straight.  Tired of this capitalistic bullshit that money buys you everything.  It doesn't.

You sum my thoughts up on it too. Restaurant customers want a nice meal eg good food principally, if you don't get that everything else is irrelevant.

Plus I'll  add for me Football supporters are an entirely different breed of customer because even when what's on the menu is *****, they may still pay to come in and support the brand, because essentially the brand is the supporters themselves, they create the identity and image of the club. No fans, no club.

Don't risk it, because things get out of hand very quickly.

Blackpool fans caused disruption at their last match of the season protest v Huddersfield which ended up being abandoned. There was an attempt by fans to get into the Directors Box, two ended up in court and got jailed for threatening behaviour.

There was a game that Derby played and someone blew a whistle as Derby were on the attack, we stopped the other team promptly when up the other end and the whistler promptly got a Colombo kicking.

Thats how I remember it, I'm sure someone will correct me with the right version of events :-)
