Van der MoodHoover
Too young to remember the maximum wage. Anyone know what the argument was for abolishing it? Link to comment https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/21252-jimmy-hill/#findComment-931781 Share on other sites

Wolfie20
Proper football man - player, players' representative, manager, MOTD presenter - done it all. R.I.P. Link to comment https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/21252-jimmy-hill/#findComment-931906 Share on other sites

Maybe not slavery , when they where on £20 a week it was well above the average wage, and clubs where not so wealthy by any means. History has turned things upside down, butchers used to earn loads more than entertainers Link to comment https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/21252-jimmy-hill/#findComment-932120 Share on other sites
Pearl Ram
I'm not saying I agree with what some players earn these days but when you consider the crowds players played in front of prior to the abolition of the maximum wage it was almost criminal what these guys were getting paid, we of a certain age are aware Tom Finney for example had to supplement his wages by being a plumber in the close season. This was a man that when injured and playing away from home, the home team asked Preston to keep his absence quiet because he could put 10,000 on the gate. So I think it was only right the very people crowds were paying to see got a bigger slice of the action. Jimmy Hill is not responsible for the madness of today's wages but he sure deserves the credit for getting players a better deal back in 1961. My mate's dad played for Gillingham - and my parents later (when I was old enough to understand) told me that he earned £10 + bonuses - which if he scored and they won might have added about £3 to his weekly wage. That was the reality. The average wage in 1960 outside of football was £15. Link to comment https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/21252-jimmy-hill/#findComment-932134 Share on other sites

Mostyn6
I'm of the opinion that fans pay to see players, not chairman/directors, so the higher proportion of your ticket money should go to the players and not the fat cat owner. That said, the ticket prices are far too high, but still, they barely cover wages. JImmy HIll was a true football man, almost an institution in my mind. Rest in peace.
