Overrated/Underrated Players

Taking inspiration from the which Derby players are under/overrated thread, which players from any club that isn't Derby do you think are seriously underrated?

I'll kick things off since he's being discussed on January Transfer suggestions thread in Transfer Talk - Jack Grealish. Obviously he's got some talent, he wouldn't be starting in the PL at his age if he didn't have talent, but I really haven't seen much to suggest he's good enough to warrant a tug of war between England v Ireland for his allegiance etc. Maybe he would shine playing under better players. Didn't particularly rate Sterling as much as some did at Liverpool, but at City I like him a lot, if only he could finish a bit better!

Underrated is Mahrez. Obviously this season he's got more recognition but since they snapped him up cheap he's been a very tidy player. Luckily I spotted his talent previously and am benefiting from his Fantasy Football points this year

I find it funny how every says Scholes is massively underrated and then goes on to say how he was the best midfielder of his generation in terms of passing, setting the tempo etc.

He can't be underrated if everyone raves about him. That's like saying you secretly expect England to do well at a tournament because the pressure is off them and nothing is expected of them.

Anyway, I'll say that Busquets is massively underrated by most. As an avid Barca follower, it's amazing how little credit he gets for what he offers. He is one of the best DMs of his generation.

In terms of the Premier League now, I'd say Milner is underrated. Always made me laugh when people moaned he was in the England team, like everyone expected him to perform like Arjen Robben on the wing.

One of the most overrated by a mile was Wayne Rooney. I can only assume he earns so much money because of the Rooney name, or brand, and not because of his actual ability. He was quality, but to say he earned like double the amount of players like David Villa and Andrs Iniesta is some kind of sick joke.

I cannot even begun to conceive how Andros Townsend is rated, let alone overrated. The most brainless footballer of all time, play football like an 11 year old plays FIFA

I also think Lampard was pretty underrated considering he won everything and was consistently a good goal scoring midfielder, even for City.

Overrated - Rooney(18 to 24 were his peak years), Delph, Kyle Walker, Stirling (£48m and can't finish), Llanna, Mertasaker, Ramires, Wickham, Pelle, Berahino, Rondon, Lamela, Zaha, Skirtel

Underrated - Puncheon, Shawcross, Butland, Azpiliicueta, Joel Campbell, Carl Jenkinson, Courtiniho, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Mahrez

I disagree with 3 of your overrateds and 2 of your underrateds.

Also, and he isn't included in the 2 I disagree with, but I don't think Mahrez is underrated (but I do think he's good, which is why I haven't included him in the 2). General consensus (from what I can see) is he's Leicester's best player, what he was contending with was that no-one had ever heard of him.

I think I listed Mahrez because a lot of people have only just jumped on the band wagon but I saw a lot of promise at the tail end of last season.  I'm enjoying him and Leicester doing well as it proves you can still find the hidden gems that can give you a shot at glory.  The sad thing is that come the end of the season and they've trailed off to finish 5th, Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal or Cit-eh will come along, throw £15m the Foxes way and he'll be off to sit on the bench and collect £100k a week...

I'm like you Bris, big Barca fan boy. I think the reason that Busquets gets bad press is from the El Classico matches of a few seasons ago. The Mourinho Real era. Busquets looked like he had been shot every time a player was near him. Dive dive dive. He wasn't the only one, but as the central holding midfield player, he should be able to tackle/hold off a player without going over, every time. And of course these games were built up by Sky, therefore people's opinion of him as a player were average midfielder who falls over and allows Iniesta and Xavi to play

I feel like Jerome Boateng doesn't get that much recognition and he probably is one of the best center backs in world football, correct me if I'm wrong though!

This has me temped to start another thread entitled top players that got away.

Man City - Jerome Boateng, think they had him for a season, probably didnt play him much. Went to bayern, regular international, world cup winner, one of the best in world football.

Man Utd - Gerard Pique - barely played for Man Utd, whilst playing second fiddle to the Ferdinand-Vidic parntership. Went back to Barca, subsequentally won the champions league, world cup, euro champs, and married Shakira.

Chelsea - Kevin deBruyne - won of 100s of players at the chelsea farm who never play in the first team, loan out, eventually sell. Went to Wolfsburg turns into one of the best attacking players in the Bundersliga, Man City end up spending 50odd million him.

Add Pogba, Forlan and Tevez to that United list too. Javier Mascherano at West Ham! Sometimes it just doesn't work out at some clubs for some players, and on other occasions it's ridiculous decisions from the top.

First-team football is absolutely vital for progression, and sometimes top PL clubs aren't willing to be a little patient with their players - Chelsea and Man City being big examples.

I don't understand your Mascherano point. Didn't Liverpool pay almost 20m to take him away from West Ham and then Barcelona paid roughly the same to buy him? West Ham didn't 'own' him and all that other nonsense (leading to their 5.5m fine) which is partly down to why he didn't play much for them. He was only there for half a season. Hardly the same as hardly playing Pogba and Pique and letting them walk away.
