Actor Nicholas Lyndhurst is to star in the Only Fools and Horses prequel, playing the father of the character he made famous in the original show.

The 47-year-old will play "art connoisseur" Freddie "The Frog" Robdal - Rodney Trotter's biological father - in Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n' Chips.

The comedy drama, which is set in 1960, also features Inbetweeners star James Buckley as the teenage Del Boy.

The 90-minute show will be screened on BBC One next year.

Also joining the cast are Bad Girls star Kellie Bright as Del Boy's glamorous and "tarty" mother Joan Trotter and ex-EastEnder Phil Daniels as Del's grandfather, Ted Trotter.

"Nick Lyndhurst is a comedy genius and I can't think of anyone better suited to bring the shady but charming Freddie Robdal to life," said writer John Sullivan.

"And James Buckley has a tough act to follow but is sure to do for leather bomber jackets and winkle-pickers what David Jason did for camel-haired coats and cocktail umbrellas!" he added.

The plot will revolve around the release of safe cracker Freddie Robdal from prison after serving a 10-year sentence which will "ruffle some feathers in the Trotter household".

It will also feature teenage versions of show favourites Boycie, Trigger and Denzil.
