Day
DERBY County are reeling from a double blow. They lost for a third successive time last night when they fell 3-2 to Barnsley, who had been bottom of the Championship going into the clash at Pride Park Stadium. And afterwards manager Nigel Clough revealed that midfielder Paul Green could need another operation on his troublesome foot which would rule him out for four to six weeks. Green (right) underwent surgery last season to repair a broken metatarsal but he has been struggling this season and has needed pain-killers to play. He started against Sheffield United at the weekend but the problem flared again in training yesterday morning and he missed the Barnsley match. "We are not quite sure what the diagnosis is but he may need an operation and we could lose him for four to six weeks," said Clough. "There is obviously something that's not right with his foot. "We were advised by the specialist that if Greenie rested his foot during the international break, it would be fine. He played against Sheffield United and then a few days later he started feeling it again. "So something is not right and we will have to investigate it further." Derby could also lose defender Jake Buxton for a few weeks. "Jake's got a problem with his stomach, it could be a hernia. We will have it checked out," said Clough. "Stephen Pearson felt some discomfort in his groin and could only manage 10 minutes against Barnsley," added Clough. The manager feels his team is being punished at the moment for every little error they make. Defeat by Barnsley followed reversals against Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest. Rob Hulse's fine header from Lee Croft's excellent cross put the Rams one up last night and Hulse missed a clear-cut chance to make it two. "Rob said he took his eye off the ball and it skimmed his forehead and went wide," said Clough. "If that had gone in it could have led to a nice three or 4-0 win." The poor performance of referee Nigel Miller left Clough frustrated. "I just thought there was an awful lot of strange decisions," said Clough. "We thought it was a foul on Kris Commons before Barnsley's second goal. Their players and ours stopped. "It is very frustrating when we are battling away and we can't get a decision. "We are not looking for any favours or anything we do not deserve. We are just looking for run-of-the-mill decisions being given correctly. "The push on Kris Commons is a run-of-the-mill decision. "That is not an excuse, but it would help if we could get a decision." Day
Paul Green is facing a month on the sidelines, with plans in place for minor surgery this weekend. The midfield ace will see a specialist tomorrow (Thursday 17th September) to confirm he needs the procedure, which will put a new screw into the injured foot to strengthen it. If, as is expected, the operation goes ahead, Green will be ruled out of action for at least a month. Rams manager Nigel Clough said: "It's a blow to us because Paul is an important player in our squad, but if the surgery is necessary then he must have it. "He's not been right since the season started and it's been frustrating for him to be in and out the side. "At least now we have identified something that will fix the problem and get him back to where he needs to be. "Paul is a terrific pro and a great lad, so there is no doubt he will work hard to be back in our team as soon as possible."
