Patrick Bamford

Patrick Bamford musters one touch in 40 minutes as Norwich defeat Middlesbrough in Championship play-off final.

  • A clearly unfit Patrick Bamford endures a fallow afternoon at Wembley
  • On-loan Chelsea striker mustered his first shot after an hour of inactivity
  • Bamford has suffered play-off final woe for second season running
  • Middlesbrough forward was used as a late sub by Derby County last year

Patrick Bamford is Chelsea’s answer to Harry Kane, at least that is what we told you in the wake of his Championship Player of the Year prize.

On this evidence, comparison to Harry Redknapp would be more apt, for Bamford’s movement was about as sluggish as the Middlesbrough team coach which arrived 40 minutes late ahead of the game.

He barely touched the ball as his loan club surrendered to a 2-0 defeat by top-flight-bound Norwich City.

After half-time his body language betrayed his thoughts – a beaten man, a gamble backfired.

It was a surprise to see him last until the end. At one point, as Kike warmed up on the touchline, Bamford cast a glance towards the dugout – he almost wanted to be taken from his misery.

Instead, Aitor Karanka substituted strike partner Jelle Vossen – and so lost the game. Bamford had one shot – easily saved by John Ruddy – and fluffed another cross when free inside the area. He was beaten to every 50-50, even 60-40s in his favour were unwinnable.

In short, Bamford should not have been out there and, as such, it would be hugely unfair to judge him on this isolated, lifeless performance.

We've all cried at Wembley. Show some class

I rarely agree with you on anything on here but you are spot on with this. Totally classless laughing at him, as low as the red dogs singing to keogh.

Some people should remember how they were feeling a year ago....

as for crying at Wembley I have done it 3 or 4 times...Germany in the Euros, last season and West Brom...although that one was tears of joy....!

As for whether I cried, probably not quite but it was literally the worst day of my life. I don't like Bamford, but I wouldn't even wish that feeling on my worst enemy.

Anyway, when people fail, it speaks for itself. It only ever reflects badly on if you're pointing and laughing. Our former manager should have taught us a thing or two about being respectful.

Losing at Wembley was awful - for about 5 minutes.

Then the Memsahib said "Let's go to the pub".

Bamford might as well take the same approach - he played like a pub player yesterday.

Bamford does strike me as the sort of guy who isn't much use in the big games.

Not in that he's not "clutch" (as they say in America) or whatever, it's just that in a big game, you're going to be playing a good team and against a good team, you need everyone to defend and retain possession. Patrick's a great finisher and good going forward but he doesn't have the defensive ability, or the work rate, to be much use in a game where the other team is equally as good as you, or better.

As for crying, I'm impressed. I never thought of him as one to have that much passion.
