Sam Vokes almost came on loan

YOUNG Wolves striker Sam Vokes was denied a season-long loan move to Derby County at the 11th hour of Tuesday’s transfer deadline window after the Rams’ proposed deal to sell Rob Hulse to Middlesbrough collapsed.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed last night that Vokes had been due to leave Molineux for Pride Park for the season to keep up his match experience in the wake of the arrival of another new striker to Mick McCarthy’s team in Austrian Stefan Maierhofer.

Vokes, 19, is away with Wales Under-21s and then the senior squad and Moxey said the Derby deal had fallen through too late to secure another move for the former Bournemouth youngster.

“We weren’t going to let Sam go unless we signed Stefan Maierhofer,†Moxey said.

“Once that was done, we agreed a deal for Derby to take Sam for the season.

“We had lots of options for Sam but he and the manager were happy for him to go to Derby.

“And with them having done a deal with Middlesbrough for Rob Hulse, we thought it would all go through.â€Â

But Moxey revealed the situation changed just half-an-hour before Tuesday’s summer transfer window shut.

“We had a telephone call at 4.30pm to say Hulse’s proposed move to Middlesbrough had fallen through and therefore they couldn’t guarantee Vokes would be playing,’’ said Moxey.

“So that then set off a mad scramble between three or four clubs interested in taking Sam.

“But with the time against us, and with Sam away on international duty, it all became impossible for us to do a deal.’’

Vokes may still have the option of joining a Championship club on an emergency loan when the loan window re-opens in a week’s time.

Moxey said: “We agreed to take a breath and wait the seven days before seeing what to do with Sam.

“There are no hard feelings with anyone, but we’re disappointed for him because he had the chance of a loan move for the season only for it to be scuppered at the last moment.â€Â

Why did this hinge on the Hulse deal, surely we need another fit striker at the club??

We could if clough didn't think that Davies and Commons were strikers and Dickov is a suitable backup for Hulse using our 4-5-1 sorry 4-3-3 formation.
