Sit on your rocking chair on the porch in the US of A and no one bats an eyelid.

Put a couch outside your front door and everyone thinks you’re scum ?

Add a shot gun to that rocking chair in America nobody bats an eyelid.

Do the same in Uttoxeter and it’s looked at unfavourably.

Just had email from Ward Recycling...

Could be an absolute boon for this thread!   ?

Dear Customer
Upholstered Furniture - New Charges 1 February 2023

The Environment Agency have recently issued a new piece of legislation and upholstered furniture can no longer be disposed of at landfill sites. Instead, these soft furnishings must be safely disposed of through incineration.
These items have been found to contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which are harmful to the environment, wildlife and humans if not disposed of safely. Investigative work carried out by The Environment Agency has identified large quantities of POPs and other hazardous chemicals in the foam and textiles of upholstered furnishings.

Items containing Persistent Organic Pollutants include:

• Sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, futons
• Kitchen, bedroom, and dining room chairs
• Foot stools
• Office chairs, upholstered garden chairs
• Bean bags, floor cushions and sofa cushions

The new legislation means that WARD is no longer able to accept these items within loads of general waste, these items should be disposed of separately as they require segregated, processing, haulage and disposal routes. If you require any further guidance on the disposal of these soft furnishings or to discuss the pricing of segregated disposal, please contact our customer service team on 0345 337 0000 or email Customer.services@ward.com

All incoming waste containers are subject to inspection, and should any found to be contaminated with upholstered furniture then a non-conformance charge will apply of £25 per seat, I.e. chair £25, two seater sofa £50, three seater sofa £75 etc

Please accept our apologies for the short notice, unfortunately the ruling for this new legislation was not made clear by the Environment Agency until very recently.

Kind Regards,

etc, etc...
