Rams ready to seek a striker

DERBY County will dip into the loan market for a striker this week if Steve Davies' injury sidelines him for a lengthy spell.

Davies left Pride Park Stadium on crutches and with his left leg heavily strapped from thigh to ankle after Saturday's 2-1 win against Plymouth Argyle.

He went down early in the second half after his studs appeared to get caught in the turf.

It was unclear afterwards whether the 21-year-old had damaged his knee, his ankle or both.

Davies, clearly in pain, signalled to the bench immediately and the physio was quick to call for a stretcher.

Derby are already without centre-forward Chris Porter until Christmas following surgery on his hip and last week allowed Luke Varney to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the year.

There is no recall clause on Varney.

That leaves Rob Hulse and Kris Commons as the only fit strikers if Davies is ruled out.

"If he is going to be out for any length of time we will need cover," said manager Nigel Clough.

"With only two fit strikers we will attempt straight away to get one in on loan this week.

"We'll start now drawing the list up and making the calls and see what we can do.

"We are not sure exactly what Steve's injury is or the extent of it but he will have all the scans and X-rays they have and we will know a bit more today.

"It could be either knee or ankle or both."

Davies has had wretched luck with injuries since signing from Tranmere Rovers last summer.

And he has had no luck playing against Plymouth.

He fractured an eye-socket and cheekbone in the corresponding fixture last season.

Later in the season he broke a metatarsal in his foot in training.

"He's not having any luck at all and it is sod's law that the day after we let Luke Varney out on loan we get an injury in the one position where we don't have cover," said Clough.

"We just hope it is one of those that is not as serious as it first looked."
