Steve Davies Injury News

Steven Davies' hamstring injury is not as bad as first feared, with the results of a scan showing only minor damage rather than a full tear.

The Rams medical staff are not putting a time scale on the recovery, with Davies targeting a quick return to action.

The 21 year old picked up the injury early during the Carling Cup tie against Rotherham; however, the scan has shown no major issue and at this stage the coaching staff are refusing to rule him out of any of the upcoming games.

The news will be a relief to Nigel Clough, who is already without Chris Porter until around Christmas time, having undergone a hip operation.

The Rams manager says it's a positive outcome:

"It's a relief Steven (Davies) is not a long term injury and we have been told that the layoff will be short term; beyond that we are not prepared to put a date on it or rule him in or out of any matches

"He has made excellent progress over the close season and played very well in the opening Championship game against Peterborough United, so it is important for him to continue on that path.

"Obviously Chris Porter is not going to be available for some time, but the other news is very positive.

"Kris Commons is fine; Rob Hulse is getting closer to availability and hopefully Steven Davies won't be out for very long at all."

Doesn't help us much for Saturday, I'd be tempted to try Commons up front alone or revert back to a 4-4-2 and stick Varney alongside him, we've tried the 4-5-1 with Varney and it hasn't worked. No fault of his own as he's simply not a player that can play the lone striker role.

I'd have teale up front and commons on the left croft on the right and stick with 4-5-1
