Anyone else think that the premier league is overrated?

I disagree with most of this thread. Most posts sound like we are all pretentious football purists who despise the commercial aspect of the game and can't tolerate the fat cat clubs at the top. I think the PL is the best league in the world. It's easily the fastest and most exciting league to watch. I think each season we are seeing the "top #" grow in size with the likes of Spurs and Everton entering the fray and I think FFP will allow this growth to continue and make the league much more open. I for one dream of seeing us in the PL not just for financial stability but to see us tested against the best. Also we wouldn't be signing the likes of GT and having others commit their future if it wasn't for the lure of going up. I admit there may be a few clubs in PL that fail to get the pulse racing but find me league with 20 exciting clubs to watch.

Isn't some of this simply sour grapes that the PL gets so much attention on opening day in comparison to championship.

FFP limits spending in relation to income. The bigger your income the more you can spend. FFP will therefore tend to re-enforce the position of the rich clubs.

Every fan wants to see his/her club in the top flight, and I'm not one for calling big fees "obscene" or any of that lark, I just reached hype overload with it years ago and no longer care. If despising the plastics who lap all this up makes me a football purist then guilty as charged!

Once the Premier League starts, the other leagues pale into insignificance in the media. Annoyingly, the Scottish Premier League also takes prominence over the Championship.

Money talks and that's why you see adverts for Marks and Spencer and not Smith's Hardware.

Demand is there and whilst viewers tune in in their millions, it will always be the case that Premiership football gets overhyped as per the David Mitchell sketch.

I have Sky but only use it to watch Derby matches as far as football is concerned.

Pmsl......nice link

I agree completely with you on the hype overload and also do not need every game sold to me as a must see blockbuster. My point was that the PL itself is not overrated as opposed to Skys coverage of it. I am as selective as the next fan in which games I watch, just feel that slating the prem in comparison to la liga etc is nonsense. Some posts sound like the sort who need to watch BBC4 for a higher intellect instead of the common rubbish others entertain themselves with. I agree there are plenty of plastics who would sooner see Man Utd televised every week and who would have no interest or idea about players or teams outside of the "big 4" but that should not deflect from the quality and pace of the PL.

With regards to FFP it may have that effect in the short term but over a longer period I believe it will even the playing field a little. It at least restricts the huge cash injections from oligarch type owners and brings a ceiling of sorts into spending, albeit a fairly high one.

The last paragraph really shows the problem with  FFP.First of all it is meant to keep the status quo not

make an even playing field. The top 6or7 clubs are nicely set up to make large incomes thanks to oligarchs

and rich backers. Now they have stopped that, what about the rest of us?Why shouldn't we be allowed to

have our own super rich backers?Wemay or may not want it that way but that's not the point, the point

is that its the only way for any other club to join in the party, and they have stopped it.

I choose not to watch games between the "big" 6, as invariably these games are boring stalemates. While I understand why you might find the teams you mentioned boring to watch, I dare say their fans would say the same about the other teams and Derby too if they were in the league

And that's the point. The PL is judged on its top 4. I don't imagine Derby v Hull to excite the world either.

Actually surprised that so many people agreed with me on this.

Don't know why.

I don't watch it any more. I nod off during match of the day and their talking heads.

The diving is annoying

The butt licking is more annoying

The way it's full of players who do nothing for our national squad is sad

Over a grand for season tickets at some clubs is taking the rip out of 'fans'

I could go on but I get boring

Ignored the free day of sky sports. Honestly think if they were recording it in my garden, I'd close the curtains. Such sycophantic sh1te

If it was being recorded in your garden I certainly can tell you wouldn't be sitting on the fence.

When the relegated club are paid more than the champions the previous season were paid something is wrong somewhere.

A lot of fans of Premier clubs are moving to support lower league local clubs to get back to grass roots.

But we all still want to be in the Premier League!!

Man U loose the first game so Match Of The Day pundits say they need to go out and spend 200 million!!

Bet fans of clubs like Portsmouth love hearing statements like that.

'Small' clubs like Blackburn will never ever get the chance to win the PL again. It's a total farce

Keep in mind Blackburn won it after spending millions.
