The increasing role of agents

The thing that has been most notable recently is the way that agents are now integral to the scouting of talent and the identification of players.

for example.....

Alassane Toure is managed by Desmond Tra of the Leeds based Umbrella sports agency. They have just been taken over by Aurum PMG. The director of Aurum is Neil Sillett the former Derby County physio who was here when Schteve was assistant to Jim Smith.

By building networks with these agencies we seem to get to know about talent that has been identified by others. we are not necessarily scouting these players ourselves.

Neil Sillett has a close association with Paulo Wanchope and grass roots football in Costa Rica.

This is an interesting article relating to their association.

It would not surprise me if we were to be linked with Costa Ricans other than Gamboa if we conclude a deal for Toure and build further bridges with Sillet and Aurum.

I think it is this networking with agents which is what Sam Rush was referring to in the immediate aftermath of Nigel Clough's departure and the subsequent plans to restructure the recruitment.

Elsewhere i have already posted regarding the fact that all of this summers development squad signings seem to have been brought to us by the Full Contact agency who manage Shaquille McDonald, Alefe Santos and Kelle Roos. It seems likely that they also were involved in the deals to bring Ivan Calero and Alban Bunjaku as well as the trial for Arinse Uade.

Cyrus Christie is with Base Soccer Agency. A key consultant at Base is Mark Rankine the former Wolves player who will be well known to Chris Evans. Schteve referred to how one phonecall created the opportunity to get Christie.

These contacts seem to create opportunities for us in the transfer market . It seems that agents rather than scouts are increasingly the key people.

Agents may be able to set deals up, and having close relationships with the will make it easier to sign players, but we still need top scouting to make sure we set up deals for the right ones. I'm liking it to be honest.

They seem to prefer to bring in the players for a trial.

Schteve then obviously decides if he wants them.

So far most only medaglia, uade and allen have definitely not been offered terms.

I'm a bit surprised that there hasn't been more activity directly associated with the european scouting.

The first team is little changed.

I guess my query is how many have been recommended to us that we haven't taken on trial. If the scouts are filtering the likely candidates that would make some sense.

Cracking post btw.

Spot on; agents have definitely taken a more prominant role in recent times and certainly seem to be helping shape our recruitment this summer (at least more visibly than before) especially in the development squad.

The article that was linked to the original post is a very interesting read as well!

- Agent makes you aware of a player's availibility

- Send a scout to watch said player

- Call your new best buddy agent and sign player

OR

-Scout a player

-Buy player

-Agent takes a liking to you and your club

-Tells you that another of his clients, "International Superstar A", has a buyout clause of just 1m and is not likely to ask for high wages

-"WOW! You mean we can sign "International Superstar A" for just 1m and nobody else knows about the clause?"

-Sign superstar for dirt cheap

-Increase relationship with agent more.
