I would love to know how stoppage time works.

You can have a game where absloutely nothing happens and you seem to get the obligatory 3 or minutes stoppage.

Yesterday there were 4 substitutions, one goal, a stoppage when Johnny Russell got wiped out, a stoppage where Ward got taken out, a yellow card for time wasting and yet still there was only 5 minutes added on?

Isn't something like 30 seconds per sub

1 minute for a goal plus each lengthy stoppage for treatment.

Totally inadequate when faced with a team deploying wigan's tactics and a shiit ref.

As I say you can have a match with none of the above that will have 3 or 4 minutes stoppage time then yesterday with all of the above only has 5 minutes, its ridiculous.

In the first 10 minutes the ball was actually in play for just 3 mins 48 seconds.

On only 4 occasions did play last more than 30 seconds between stoppages.

That's interesting, RamNut. I found myself really bored by how long the ball was actually out of play for during the match.

I cant remember it being so bad any any game I've been to.

I blame Wigan RFC.

Yes ! Thank you.

An intelligent reply to my post. (Perhaps they should make you a mod).

That was my point exactly.

Wigan took an age over every throw in, goal kick, free kick and corner.

Equally infuriating was the way the ref stood in front of the ball at our free kicks preventing them from being taken quickly.

The constant stoppages is what ruined the game.

In the second half the ball was in play for longer than 30 seconds on only 12 occasions.

When ward was substituted after 18mins of the second half, the longest time that the ball was in play lasted just 47 seconds.

This is why we couldn't get going.

During the second half

We watched and waited......

1 minute and 8 seconds for wigan to stand around before taking 2 corners

4 minutes and 49 seconds for wigan to stand around before taking 8 free kicks

5 minutes and 42 seconds for wigan to fucck about taking 16 throw ins

2 minutes and 32 seconds for wigan to place the ball before taking 5 goal kicks

1 minute and 4 seconds whilst they celebrated their goal.

Total 15 minutes and 15 seconds of time wasting in the second half alone.

plus.......

2 minutes 15 seconds for treatment to Russell

3 minutes and 8 seconds for 4 substitutions

Now you know.

There should have been 20 minutes of extra time.

The ball is typically only ever in play for 30 minutes a half. Time is not added on for things like free kicks, throw-ins etc - to say there should have been 20 minutes of time added on is bonkers.

I'm not expecting to get 20 minutes but the point is they took an age and no time was added on at all.

The subs, treatment and goal celebration was 6 minutes.

And the time wasting is easily 10 minutes on top of that.

They took twice as long as us to take throw ins, free kicks, goal kicks and corners.

When boyce got booked it took him 41 seconds to take a free kick.

Other free kicks took 47 seconds, and 60 seconds - no bookings.

One throw in took 56 seconds - no booking.

56 SECONDS TO TAKE A FKN THROW IN FFS

In cricket, golf, tennis and other sports you're warned and then penalised for slow play and time wasting. I wouldn't be against penalties for clubs adopting time-wasting tactics, even if it's us.

Every club do it but it was definitely very noticeable the other day. They were even time wasting at 0-0.

It's just boring, anti-football. As ever though football is well behind other sports when it comes to things like this because the governing bodies in question are feckless conservatives, unable to take positive action against the problems inherent in the game.

Yes, that is OTT. The ref should have booked players earlier.

You should send this to the FA and DCFC. It's interesting. It also notes that the referee added exactly no time on for any of the time wasting or the goal celebrations....

I am convinced referees guess the added time anyway.

And from memory, the clock is stopped in the following sports:

Basketball (following a whistle but not every time the ball goes out)

Rugby Union (following a whistle)

Rugby League (I think)

Ice Hockey

American football

Netball and Hockey I don't know the rules well enough and every other major sport is you play until a certain score is reached. So tell me why football is always so massively behind other sports.

American football only stops for certain things - like incomplete passes, changing offense to defense, and following kicks ad touchdowns. Other times it keeps ticking with a limit on he omg teas take between plays.
