Chelsea have confirmed the signing of teenage striker Daniel Sturridge on a four-year contract from Manchester City.

Sturridge had been expected to secure a move to Stamford Bridge after turning down a new deal at City.

With the pacey forward being under the age of 24, City are entitled to compensation and the fee is likely to be decided by a tribunal.

The Premier League rivals have failed to agree on a settlement, but reports suggest Chelsea could end up paying £5million for the 19-year-old.

He had also been linked with Aston Villa and West Ham United, but will add to the attacking options at Carlo Ancelotti's disposal this season.

Sturridge, who is the nephew of former Derby forward Dean Sturridge, made his debut for City in February 2007 against Reading.

During his City career, he scored six goals in 32 games in all competitions, with the majority of his appearances coming from the bench.

Not really his wage demands were stupidly high, I think it somthing like £80,000pw he asked for. He was never going to get a game with Robinho, Santa Cruz, Bellamy and maybe Eto in the squad so get rid. Although £5m sounds abit cheap when you look at Kevin Doyle going to Wolves for £6.5m.

Had the Arab owners not took over I'm sure Hughes would of played Sturridge and he would never of asked for a stupid amount of money to sign a new contract.

Problem Hughes has is the Arabs have their transfer targets and I would imagine there is alot of pressure on him to play these players for marketing reasons. I think he's abit of a mug for standing for it and not walking away, he'l be out of a job by January anyhow when the Arabs are pissed off that they're not top of the league.
