Jules Bianchi: Driver is in 'critical but stable condition' say family

The family of Marussia driver Jules Bianchi have issued an update on his condition after he suffered severe head injuries at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old from France had surgery on Sunday after his car hit a recovery vehicle that was removing another car.

The family revealed he suffered a diffuse axonal injury  and is regarded as "critical but stable".

The FIA, world motorsport's governing body, have asked race director Charlie Whiting for a report on the crash.

What is diffuse axonal injury?

By Michelle Roberts, BBC News Online Health Editor

If the brain moves back and forth in the skull as a result of rapid acceleration or deceleration, such as in a car crash, damage can occur

The shearing action disrupts the brain's architecture and kills brain cells

In response to the injury, the brain swells and this increasing pressure can restrict blood flow, causing further brain damage

Assessing how much damage has occurred can take time - some damage may well be irreversible

"Jules remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi. He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury [when the head is rapidly accelerated or decelerated] and is in a critical but stable condition," the family said.

"The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident."

The statement added: "This is a very difficult time for our family, but the messages of support and affection for Jules from all over the world have been a source of great comfort to us. We would like to express our sincere appreciation."

Jenson Button is considering a switch to the world endurance championship should he fail to land a competitive Formula 1 seat for next season.

Sources say the McLaren driver, 34, has had talks with Porsche, for whom former F1 racer Mark Webber drives.

McLaren are waiting for an answer from their main target, Fernando Alonso, before finalising their driver line-up.

Button is only interested in remaining in F1 if he can secure a competitive car, his manager Richard Goddard said.

McLaren are the only big team still to finalise their line-up. They have not decided to retain Button, or his team-mate Kevin Magnussen, alongside Alonso if the Spaniard decides to join McLaren rather than take a year out of F1 in the hope of securing a Mercedes drive in 2016.

Goddard said: "McLaren aren't sure what they're doing and what their line-up will be. That's pretty obvious.

"Anyone who has a race seat available would like to have Jenson in it.

"Jenson is still focused on F1 but would only want to be in one of the top teams. So we're always open to talking to anyone."

Goddard described the world endurance championship as a "formidable series that is gaining strength".

He added: "It is a very credible race series to compete in.

"Jenson is an incredibly competitive racing driver who wants to race. He's too good to sit at the back of the F1 grid. So he either gets a competitive car in F1 or he goes to get one elsewhere."

Button has scored nearly double Magnussen's points this year. The Dane's qualifying pace has impressed - he leads Button by nine to seven in his rookie season - but his weaker performance in races is a concern for the team.

It is conceivable that Button, the 2009 world champion, may end up taking the matter out of McLaren's hands.

Button could find himself in a position where he has a strong offer on the table from Porsche or another team and has to demand an answer from McLaren.

If McLaren are at that point unable to guarantee him a drive in F1, Button may decide that a switch to the world endurance championship is too good an opportunity to miss.

On 29 June 2014, Caterham Enterprises Ltd, Caterham (UK) Ltd and Sheikh Mohamed Nasarudin (Seller) and their shareholders Tony Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Bin Meranun entered into a Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Engavest SA (Buyer) with regards to 1Malaysia Racing Team Sdn Bhd/Caterham F1 Team.

Since the date of the Agreement, the Seller has refused to comply with its legal obligations to transfer their shares to the Buyer. The Buyer has been left in the invidious position of funding the team without having legal title to the team it had bought. This is in total contradiction to the Seller's press release of 3 October 2014 which stated that Mr Fernandes and his Caterham Group had no longer any connection with the Caterham F1 Team.

The administrators of Caterham Sports Limited have been appointed on behalf of Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Berhad (Exim), a creditor of Mr Fernandes and the Caterham Group. The Buyer has no connection with Exim. Caterham Sports Ltd was a supplier company to the Caterham F1 Team. Very regrettably, the administrators' appointment has had devastating effects on the F1 Team's activities. Since their appointment, the administrators have released various press statements which have been severely detrimental to the management of the Caterham F1 team.

After three months of operating the Caterham F1 Team in good faith, the Buyer is now forced to explore all its options including the withdrawal of its management team. Lawyers have been instructed by the Buyer to bring all necessary claims against all parties, including Mr Fernandes who, as an owner, will run the F1 operation.

Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, probably Williams. Would be surprised if Renault carry on. Honda due to come in..

Renault will carry on as an engine supplier as long as Red Bull stay with them. Honda are only coming in as McLaren's engine supplier.

Those six teams are the only sure-fire teams for next season.

As a motor sport fan, I'm absolutely loving it. About time F1 gets swallowed by the greed.

The Marussia Formula 1 team has ceased trading and all staff will be made redundant, administrators FRP have announced.

The team went into administration last month and had hoped to return for the final race of the season after missing the US and Brazilian Grands Prix.

Their driver Jules Bianchi remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition after suffering severe head injuries in a crash at the Japanese GP.

Over 200 people will lose their jobs.

Marussia had been in talks with two potential investors, but when a deadline of 12:00 GMT on Friday passed with no funds transferred the team folded.

Geoff Rowley, joint administrator at FRP Advisory, said: "It goes without saying that it's deeply regrettable that a business with such a great following in Britain and worldwide has had to cease trading and close its doors."

Elements of Marussia management still hope to return to F1 next season and have applied for entry to next year's world championship under the name of Manor F1, the team's original guise.
