David
Lotus have announced that co-chairman Gerard Lopez has replaced Frenchman Eric Boullier as principal of the Formula 1 team. The timing of the news immediately triggered speculation that Boullier could be heading to McLaren. McLaren are due to launch their 2014 car later on Friday. "Gerard Lopez will combine his position on the board with the role of team principal with immediate effect," Lotus said in a statement. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/25877832

davenportram
I think the silver/shiny might help with performance. As materials get hot they expand altering their shape. Shiny, silver and white things get less hot as they move through the air really fast so less effect. Concorde was white because if it was another colour it would get too hot and expand too much at supersonic speeds. When PEPSI sponsored it it couldn't go supersonic because it was painted blue. I don't think it makes much of a difference at F1 speeds, I guess Concord's problems were caused by air friction at supersonic speeds. They bits of an F1 car which get hot aren't painted at all because it would just flake off, like around the exhausts. The thinking behind it is to go for a more neutral colour for the sake of sponsors, but surely being the same colour as everyone else means you don't stand out? Big difference here is the thermal expansion of materials and the thermal conductivity. One is a metal the other a reinforced composite. The difference between 10c and 40c feels like a lot to us but in the materials world it is pretty insignificant in regards to these materials. You have to heat carbon fibre at high temperatures to set it and get the materials to work, final temp is usually around 1200c. The best example i can think of for extreme materials is the SR-71, the whole thing deformed massively when it reached it's top speed. Scared the **** out of the pilots. davenportram
The Lotus design is the most radical. Look closely at the picture the nose actually splits in two.

CumbrianRam
Not many laps done today, McLaren didn't even get out of the garage and Red Bull just managed to. Reliability will play a big part this year.
davenportram
Maybe the smaller teams with less technical parts could be at an advantage if it is simple and reliable
