Say We Get Into An Automatic Promotion-Chasing Position

We're top of the table, but we play second placed Wigan at Pride Park in a six pointer in late March.

We score in the first half and go into the break 1-0 up, buoying with confidence, a standing ovation to the players.

Then, after 60 minutes, Clough takes our most potent players, goes 4-5-1 and drops every player behind the ball when Wigan have possession. You can imagine what happens next...

I'm not going to judge this season after one match, but this isn't a new problem. I was hoping we would have the players to make this sort of thing go away. If Clough does ever get a really decent team together, what evidence is there to suggest this tetchy negativity when holding on for dear life over a team no better than ours will suddenly disappear?

Maybe we have better players than last season, I don't know, but the manager obviously doesn't think them capable enough to kill off Blackburn.

Very true.

He is still applying non league tactics.

And as for a top 6 finish..........

Aint gonna happen

Thing is, this isn't a non league thing. In fact certain managers have been like this in the top flight in recent years.

Maybe we could even fluke top 6 with Clough. Worse managers have done it.

But a dodgy promotion isn't the dream. I want us in the Prem, year after year.

Clough might get us there, but he will never keep us there, unless something changes on his side.

At least Will Hughes looked genuinely peed off after the game, wonder what his thoughts of clough are!!

I would imagine a lot of the players were because it was such an obvious negative tactical change, from so early on. Did our fullbacks even get into their half during the second half?

I'm sorry but it's time for Clough to go, it's great getting all the new players..Russell...Smith..Grant...I thought Russell was fantastic before he got subbed off, why take him off that early?! We could of at least got another goal if he was still on, Shocking tactics.. Time to go Clough!!!

This is probably up there with the most disappointed I've been as a Derby fan in the last few years.

Just this time and every other time people bring out the cliché hyperbole?

Last minute equalisers happen, teams push forwards and sometimes get lucky. Say what you will about Blackburn's quality, they fielded at least £11 million worth of strikers today. The equaliser came the £3 mil man Leon Best. I doubt we've had a net spend of £3 mil since Nigel arrived.

I mean really, I'd expect these kinds of reactions from todders, but grown men talking like this over an opening day draw? Pathetic...

I am fed up of money being used as an excuse. This was a match to be won, we were on top putting them under pressure and then our manager decided we should sit back.

Let's use money as an argument then. If you know your opposition have £11 Mil worth of strikers on the pitch why in all of humanity would you invite pressure on?

But you know screw it. Torres £50 Mil.... Michu £2 Mil..... Because money always equals quality.

Football played on a pitch, not on  an Excel graph and we finished well above these lot this season and they are undertaking cost cutting too.

I wouldn't have minded the draw if we went for it when we were ontop but the the last 20 mins were a joke, the Sky commentators were finding it hard to find words for it.

It was average today but it was the first game of the season so let's not all off ourselves just yet.

Certain members of the forum, with one in particular to still turn up, must be delighted with how this afternoon panned out.

I'm just confused.

Hasn't Clough realised that camping in your own box when your in the lead at this level of football just doesn't work. It made us look like complete fools. Even Martin Tyler was taking the mick.

It showed the rest of the footballing world that Clough doesn't trust the team to see out the game with the same tactics. We were doing fine in the 2nd half and we were pressing for the 2nd goal and looked a threat. But then he decided to put the pressure on us, at home.

I can understand sitting back more with 5 maybe 10mins to go. But 30mins of the game left? That's unacceptable. A really poor tactical decision. The team looked just as bemused as us. If we want to get out the division, we have to play positively. We aren't Stoke City hoof and hope, we play good football and want to get forward. That's the way we'll win games, like we did last season.

I just don't understand Clough's thinking. Sitting back 4 5 1 has cost us time after time and we've lost vital points. A draw was the "fair" result but we need to win games when we're not necessarily the best team on the day. That's how Man Ure have won many of their recent trophies with Ferguson. Scraping and winning games when they've played poorly or the games in the balance, like our game was today. We've got to get that mentality into the team, or most importantly Nigel. Negative tactics can only get you so far.

It's not really surprising, what made people think Clough would change after years of doing the same thing? He hasnt learnt a thing.

Even if we'd held on it wouldnt have changed anything, the whole attitude/mindset is terrible and not one of teams that generally get promoted or push for promotion.

I was feeling slightly optimistic about this season, f*ck knows why, nothings changed and nothing will with Clough in charge.

What will you're excuse be if Yeovil beat us then Albert?

The point about money wasn't an excuse, I just find it funny when people try and go on about quality on opening day. Who knows where teams will end up. Ultimately we ended up taking a point when 3 seemed on offer. Oh well, the season is 46 matches long, and we've played one. We'll get some harsh results, some lucky results. Sometimes teams will get lucky pushing us late, many won't. At the end of the day nothing waters down this kind of nonsense like it being trotted out every time something doesn't go exactly our way, and as sick of us conceding equalisers as some might be, this kind of overreaction is not only sickening, tiring and ridiculous, but doesn't even reflect reality. In fact, it seems to just reflect a childish nature and lack of a proper memory of past events.

Now, I'm sure someone is reading the above and thinking "doesn't reflect reality, I know what I've seen". The question though is do you? How many times last season in the league did we give up a winning position to draw late on? A grand total of once, against Sheffield Wednesday, on opening day. How many times did we snatch a draw from a losing position though? Four times, including once against Blackburn, at home.

This reaction is absolutely pathetic, and speaks more to an immature nature of some people than anything else.
