Bolton Sack Coyle

Bolton Wanderers have confirmed they have sacked manager Owen Coyle.

The Trotters, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are 18th in the Championship after winning only three of their ten matches.

On Saturday they were beaten 2-1 at fellow-strugglers Millwall.

Coyle, 46, took over at Bolton in January 2010, six months after guiding Burnley to promotion to the Premier League and consequently signing a contract extension at Turf Moor.

The Trotters went on to survive a relegation battle while Burnley went down. In 2010-11 Bolton reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and finished 14th after spending much of the season in the top half of the table, but last season they were relegated, ending an 11 year spell in the top division.

In March the club and Coyle were widely praised for the support they gave to [url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17928278]Fabrice Muamba, after the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest while playing against Tottenham Hotspur.

Following relegation it was revealed the [url=http://http//www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18296376]club was carrying debts of £110m, mostly owed to Isle of Man-based owner Eddie Davies.

On Saturday Coyle described the defeat at Millwall as the lowest point of his managerial career but insisted he had no intention of resigning.

However after meeting Davies and club chairman Phil Gartside on Tuesday he parted company with the club.

Coyle is a media darling, so he got away with much more than other managers.

This is so true.

It seems strange that Kean went - even stranger that Kean lasted so long in the face of the media and fans (unjustly), and strange how Coyle was never under much pressure from his fans or media (also unjustly).

The only thing you can say about Coyle is that he did lose all his good players from 2010/11, and they were never replaced. That may well be his fault of course, but it wasn't a case of Coyle taking a bad side down.

But they should have started better. 18th place for a side with that much quality at this level is very poor.

I remember saying in the Bolton match day thread that Coyle was crap. And somebody hacked me down for saying it...who was it? Go on, show yourselves..!

It was me!

And I still don't think Coyle's proven to be crap yet. What if he goes and does a good job in his next job?

The nucleus he had at the club while at Bolton in the Prem was very decent, easily able to stay up. The problem was he lst all his attacking options and signed Ngog and the long since redundant Tuncay for some unknown reason, meaning that a side that could easily stay up lost any attacking threat it had, and then lost Holden and Lee Chung-Yong for the whole season (practically, in Lee's case).

They couldn't score, the whole side became affected, they didn't fix the situation and the loss of the other two along with no threat upfront (and no doubt the effect Muamba's heart attack had on the players mentally) meant they went down when they should've easily finished 11th/12th.

And that is mostly Coyle's fault, signing terrible strikers and meaning that side couldn't do anything going forwards. With Elmander/Sturridge/Lee all firing on all cylinders they were doing excellently the season before, they looked like if they had a few additions they could possibly scrape Europe with a strong campaign (in the same way that Stoke did) but Coyle screwed up, lost a few players to things he couldn't control and never regained hold on that side.

Hopefully they next guy they bring in replaces Zat Knight (who has become a walking liability) and actually signs two strikers capable of putting the ball in the net.
