Barnes to Fulham

Giles Barnes is set to join Premier League club Fulham on loan for the rest of the season.

Derby County’s attacking midfielder travelled to London last night and was expected to complete his move today.

The loan is with a view to a permanent deal.

Barnes has recently returned to action following 10 months out with a knee injury he suffered in February last year.

He underwent surgery in Colorado and was back in a Derby shirt before Christmas, when he made two appearances as a substitute.

New manager Nigel Clough started Barnes in the home defeat by Queens Park Rangers and the FA Cup draw against Nottingham Forest.

In between, he scored twice as a substitute against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

He looked short of match fitness in his two starts and was an unused substitute in Tuesday’s game at Birmingham.

In a recent interview, Barnes said: “I am at Derby but everyone wants to play in the Premiership and go as far as they can in their careers. If that’s with Derby, then great.â€Â

Another Derby player who could be on his way out of Pride Park is Emanuel Villa – only a year after joining Derby County in a £2m deal.

Uncertainty has surrounded the 26-year-old’s future at the club and there was talk of him returning to South America in the transfer window.

Now it seems the Argentinian is attracting interest from Greece and Switzerland. It is likely any move would be a loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Villa (pictured below) was signed from Mexican club UAG Tecos by former Rams boss Paul Jewell in January last year and has a contract until 2011.

He made 16 appearances in the Premier League and scored three goals but has struggled for a place this season.

He has started only one of the last 14 matches – the defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on December 9.

Villa had a run in the side earlier this season and scored six goals, four of them in the Carling Cup, including a hat-trick at Brighton.

Sorry but what a fricking joke! you can understand the reasons behind Fulham wanting a loan move first, so that Barnes can prove his fitness. Obviously they wouldnt want to sign him for a couple of million for him to pick up another major injury.

But why couldnt he of proved his fitness at Derby and signed a pre-contract so that he would join at the end of the season as long as he's fit?

Now we're a quality player down and no cash in the bank for it.

Heard the fee being £2m on SSN, bad move. Surely if we got him fit and playing decent football by the end of the season that would not only help us in the league but also add a extra mil or 2 on top

Maybe Cloughie has some targets in mind and was told to offload some top earners first.

Exactly, all the medical bills flying him off to America and paying him X amount each week to sit at home playing Fifa. The deals a joke in all honesty.

The £2m figure was mention on SSN although I would put £2m on the club saying the fee is 'undisclosed' svaing a backlash from the fans.

It wudn't surprise me if that happened as im led to believe that his best position is playing behind a striker, as can Commons and apparently Sterjovski can as well, if Clough wants a decent amount of money then out of them 3 Barnes wud command the biggest fee, given our struggle atm its a bit risky letting him go and i certainly dont think we shud considering his potential (assuming he doesn't keep getting injured ofc)

Reckon the deal must be pretty much set in stone that they will sign him then. If it was a simple loan move then he'd of signed by now as they would just send him back if he got injured again.

A member on the DET forum e-mailed Pearson, 1 of 30 odd but got a reply hinting the fee would be more if he impressed. I imagine its a basic fee plus clauses. As long as we keep Commons and Davies could be a good deal for the club.

Pearson "Roy, he's scored 15 goals for you, pay the extra!"

Hodgson " Well I expected 20 they way you went on about him."

Pearson " tight git, go on then!"

Glick "Have you got that money to pay the investors?"

Pearson "who won the superbowl mate?"

Pearson: We won't sell Barnes on the cheap

Chairman of football Adam Pearson insists Giles Barnes will not leave Derby County on the cheap.

Barnes (pictured) is today expected to complete a loan move to Premier League Fulham until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

Derby will receive a substantial loan fee for the 20-year-old attacking midfielder. The initial transfer fee could be around £2m rising to £4m with add-ons if the deal becomes permanent. Derby would also have a sell-on clause.

“There is no way he is going to leave on the cheap – Fulham would have to put in the offer we have stipulated†said Pearson.

If Barnes’ loan to Fulham does not work out he will return to Pride Park and continue his career with the Rams, although Pearson has confirmed that there are other clubs interested in the player.

Rams boss Nigel Clough says the loan deal is in the best interests of all parties.

“Giles wants that opportunity [in the Premier League] and Fulham have come in with an offer,†said Clough. "He’s not what we would class as 100 per cent match fit, and they’ll understand that as well.

"He has been out an awful long time.

“It is the dilemma and we haven’t got that time or that luxury to give him a few games to get him 100 per cent match fit. We need the players and the results now, not in a few weeks’ time, so that was in our thinking as well.â€Â

Clough admitted he had to think long and hard about letting Barnes go out on loan.

“It is easy to say you need players out but as always happens it is the ones you don’t really want to go,†he said.

“It is a great chance for him to get back in the Premiership. It is a loan and a good deal for everybody concerned at this moment.â€Â

Asked if he understands the frustrations of some supporters at seeing Barnes head for Fulham, Clough said: "Of course, but he hasn’t played for 11 months or something.

"He started against QPR and played an hour, came on against Manchester United and got a couple of goals, and started against Forest and didn’t do particularly well for an hour.

“So we are talking about three appearances in 12 months. If it was a player going out who had been playing week in, week out, we wouldn’t let him go in those circumstances.â€Â

£4m if we get it would be a decent fee for a player that hasnt hardly seen a football pitch in 18 months.
