As useless as that fact is, I strongly suspect it will prove to be the only fact stated within this thread, as the rest of it is going to be very heavily influenced by supposition and speculation!  👀

    I agree.
But without wanting to sound clever, I tried to say this a while back. League 2 most definitely and to a certain extent league 1, are almost like playing a different sport compared with the Championship. It’s very very difficult for anyone technically good or reliant on the ball being passed to them will always find it hard. Especially young players still learning.
Its very very difficult to go onto and stand out or boss games.

Shocked to see some fans calling for Lyons and Wassall to be sacked this morning on social media.
The two men responsible for the success to begin with.

Bloody hell, what's happened to Liam Thompson since the new contract? Thought he'd flourish at this level.

I didn’t really expect anyone to agree. Far too obvious to see what’s happening right now which is is why I said “he will be”……
All I’ll say is, IMO, you’ve already seen absolutely everything Thompson has to offer….

What it does accentuate for me perfectly is something I’ve always maintained and that’s that sometimes you go down the leagues and it’s much much harder to perform….

Not to be underestimated this level. It’s tough to play in and full of players that with a bit of luck or a change of circumstances could or should be playing pro football.
There’ll be players who played for our first team last year that could well end up at this level unfortunately.

10 in 35. Our next best was 5 with ravel.
My point is Knight (3 in 35), Sibley (1 in 23), Bird (2 in 40), Thompson (0 in 18), CKR (4 in 25), Plange (3 in 21), Shinnie (1 in 23). Wher eis the criticism of these players?
I think English fans love to attack the players who are a bit more out there but we give a free ride to bang average players. Without Lawrence last season we would have been relegated 1-2 months earlier.
He was our best offensive player hands down. Lets try keeping the best players and letting the mediocre players go.

Nathen Jones is ex Brighton (may even have been caretaker manager for a game) and has good links there. Possibly even played with Rosenior.
Roberts was a centre back but is t the tallest and ended up more a left sided defender. His loan spell at Rochdale ended with Rochdale being relegated and they leaked goals for fun.

No I didn’t. I didn’t ‘ask’ for anything. I said if LiamThompson or any other 5’6” ball playing teenagers boss league 1 at first attempt I’d take my hat off to them.
I didn’t mention being capable of controlling a game. I was talking in response to a player like Liam Thompson “tearing up league 1” at the first attempt. Liam Thompson is capable to controlling a game. As are many many young players. Do I think they or he will tear up an entire division for a season? No I don’t. No chance.
Agreed. But none of them were tearing up the division in their first season in it. Regardless of being 19 or 20 years of age.
Downes is now 23 and going to be 24 this season. He has over a 100 games under his belt as a regular starter. He’s been a regular in England age group squads since 17.
Matt O Riley’s first season in league 1 he played less than half the games. That’s not tearing it up. However I’m sure he bossed some games at that level. In his second season he still only started 26 games. Again in my book that’s not tearing up an entire division. Again I’m sure his consistency levels went up and he probably bossed more games than the previous season.
Walsh’s stats for that season were excellent. However he was 24 years old. Four years older than Thompson is now, and would be approaching his peak in terms of weight, muscle mass, and technical ability. Thompson is nowhere near any of those. And league 1 is a physically tough league!!!
At the risk of repeating myself ‘capable of bossing games’ is nothing like ‘tearing up league 1’. Tearing up a league I would at least expect a player to be playing more than half the games.
What do people think I’m arguing about here? That a young footballer isn’t very good? Or can anyone appreciate I’m pointing out that a young player going into a horrible difficult physical league 1 from the start of the season where expectation is high, is very different to coming into an emotionally driven siege mentality where support of the players was at its highest and expectation was at its lowest in a league and a team where technical ability was the premium requisite for a midfield player.

I politely disagree with this. What always stood out about Thompson to me was his close control. He's very tidy with the ball and therefore has all the attributes to play around a press- which is the scenario you're saying he is going to struggle with.
He's not a 'sit deep and ping passes' sort of midfielder. He's a: pick it up while being closed down, clever turn into space, and play the ball forward-type; if he can play this way as well as he did last season, there's every chance he can adapt to this level fairly quickly.
The only game i remember him struggling was when we asked him to play as a makeshift wingback... I'm excited to see what he can do in League 1. Not saying he's going to be our most critical player, but he's definitely shown enough to warrant more excitement than worry, going into this season.

    £600k ????
Derby barely earned that in two years of him sitting on the bench and playing, in the main, 23s football.
Its calculated very much on what you’ve invested in him in terms of time money and experience. Yes he played some 1st team football but he signed as a 19 year old he wasn’t a player Derby had coached, schooled and educated into the man he is now.
